Last month, in a nutshell

Welcome to the first issue of our refreshed newsletter! Here are the highlights of the EU’s latest climate news.

Starting with good news: across Europe, 47 projects have received more than €2.5 billion from the EU’s Innovation Fund and Modernisation Fund to boost Europe’s green transition. This will help us stay on course to meet our climate targets – and the EU Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change has just confirmed that achieving the EU 2030 target of (at least) 55% reduction compared to 1990 would put our continent right on track to reach climate neutrality by 2050. Meanwhile, as zero-emission vehicles gain popularity, the European Environment Agency reports a 27% decrease in the average CO2 emissions of new cars registered in Europe.

At a climate finance summit in Paris, France, President von der Leyen said that we need to mobilise private investment in climate finance for the developing countries and highlighted the role of the ‘polluter pay principle’ as a tool to cut emissions while generating financial flows. Still on global climate action, at the Bonn Climate Change Conference, EU negotiators paved the way for discussions to be held at COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, later this year. Stay tuned!
