Innovation Fund: EUR 4.2 billion to support 77 cutting-edge decarbonisation projects for the EU’s clean energy transition

The 77 projects hail from 18 European countries and were submitted under the Innovation Fund 2023 Call (IF23). The grants range from EUR 1.4 million to EUR 262 million and combined all the projects have the potential to reduce emissions by some 397.6 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent over their first ten years of operation.

Pioneering carbon capture for a lower emission future

Supported by the Innovation Fund, this first-of-its-kind project will demonstrate carbonate fuel cell (CFC) technology with the aim to reduce CO₂ emissions by 46,000 tonnes over its 5-year operation. Unlike conventional methods that require additional energy input, CFCs can simultaneously capture CO₂ emissions while generating electricity, hydrogen, and heat, making them a potential cost-effective and efficient solution for decarbonising heavy industry.
