Blue growth: challenges and opportunities for the Black Sea by MARBLUE 2024

This 2nd International Joint Conference seeks to advance sustainable development and protection of the Black Sea through interdisciplinary discussions. 4th report on Black Sea Synergy: advancing regional dialogue and cooperation despite the challenges

The fourth report on the Black Sea Synergy, by the European Commission and the EU External Action Service, highlights significant advancements in policy coherence and regional cooperation from 2019 to 2023. The report emphasises the Common Maritime Agenda as a key initiative for creating a solid framework to address the blue economy's challenges and opportunities in the Black Sea, despite the difficult geopolitical context.

Addressing marine waste: Odesa workshop for a cleaner Black Sea

The Ukrainian National Hub organised on 29 May the "Marine Waste Transformation" workshop. The event, supported by the Black Sea Assistance Mechanism (BSAM), brought together around 40 stakeholders from across Ukraine to address critical marine waste issues and the vulnerability of the Black Sea to marine litter.

The Romanian National Hub promotes Blue Skills

Constanța hosted on 23 May the “Beyond the Waves: Empowering Through Blue Skills" workshop. Over 20 stakeholders identified essential competences for Romanian maritime sectors and emphasised the need for further developing blue skills through training programs and awareness raising campaigns.

Insights and opportunities for Black Sea Blue Economy funding!

On 8 May, the Common Maritime Agenda and the European Commission hosted "Navigating Funding Opportunities in the Black Sea Blue Economy". Following the public event, the Black Sea Assistance Mechanism held bilateral meetings with project representatives to discuss potential ideas for aligning blue economy priorities with available funding opportunities, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration in the region.

Highlights from European Maritime Day 2024 organised by the European Commission

At the European Maritime Day (EMD) 2024, held on 30-31 May in Svendborg, Denmark, the maritime community reunited to address challenges and seizing opportunities within the sustainable blue economy, including sessions on EU Sea Basin Strategies' roles and synergies among research, innovation, ocean literacy, and green energy transition initiatives.

Top honors for ANEMONE project at Black Sea Awards 2023

The ANEMONE project won the top award at the last edition of the Black Sea Project Awards for its achievements in protecting and sustaining the Black Sea's marine and coastal ecosystems, being recognised as the best project in the region. ANEMONE enhanced cross-border collaboration and research, developed monitoring methodologies, and raised public awareness about the Black Sea's environmental health.
