Unsolicited nudes into NFTs

date:  25/06/2021

The rapid traction of NFTs (need a refresher of the term? check out the 17th edition of the EBSI newsflash) culminated in creative ways to fight back against cyber-flashing; a problem faced by many, especially by women. Cyber-flashing is the act of sending obscene pictures to strangers through Airdrop or Bluetooth. Despite it being a well-known form of harassment, there is no law banning the practice in the vast majority of the world. The crime without punishment prompted Zoe Scaman, strategist and founder of Bodacious, to tweet “I’ve figured out a way to stop the Twitter DM bad behavior. From now on, if you send me an unsolicited d*ck pic or a [redacted] message, I’m going to turn it into an NFT, etching it onto the blockchain with your name attached as the artist. You want it gone? You’ll have to pay me.”

Spurned by the virality of her tweet, Scaman and a duo by the name of "Very Serious" created a website - NFT the DP - with simple instructions to help anyone to turn an unsolicited pic into cash. The idea is rooted by the recognition of the problem; an initiative aimed to stop sexually explicit images without the consent of the recipients.

The forever recorded NFT on a blockchain will likely deter abusers from the act. Anyone who shares unwelcomed photos of their nudes will now have to think twice before doing so!
