Blockchain fun fact #33

Tying the knot: getting married on blockchain [...]

date:  01/12/2022

Couples can already create a smart contract that can help them get married (or even divorced) in the virtual world. The characteristics of the blockchain grants the possibility to make sure the marriage certificate is not altered beyond its inner functions and makes it available permanently, whether it is two NFT 'rings' transactions or a digital agreement between the individuals that can be accessed simply by scanning the blockchain at anytime.

The prohibition of same-sex marriages culminated in creative ways to fight for equality. Bjorn Borg/A sports fashion brand, having in mind the numbers of forbidden same-sex marriages around the world, created a platform which allowed everyone to "propose, exchange vows and get married on the blockchain". The platform enables marriage contracts, instead of money transactions, giving everyone the possibility to create contracts of love on the blockchain.

Distributed ledgers can be used to store different kinds of data, in a variable and permanent way. Decentralised marriages can certainly introduce interesting changes. It also raises a question: will ever get accustomed to attending virtual wedding ceremonies?
