On 29 September 2026, the Commission STEP team welcomed the STEP National Contact Points (NCPs) from across the EU to Brussels for the 10th meeting of the network. More than 2 years into STEP, the focus is on delivery: selecting projects, supporting the 900 projects awarded a STEP Seal across the EU, developing connection to private and institutional investors. In the coming weeks, the Commission will publish the second STEP Annual Report, available in all EU languages. It covers all details about funding mobilised to support STEP objectives by both the Commission and national and regional authorities implementing Cohesion policy, the STEP Seals awarded across Europe, and the extension of STEP to defence. The EU STEPs up for defence! On 22 April 2025, the Commission proposed to extend STEP’s scope with a 4th sector covering all defence technologies, as part of a broader ReArm package. Negotiations in the European Parliament and the Council are expected to start soon to make this a reality. Learn more about the proposal and changes for STEP below.
