Sweden: 2016 State budget proposes a 200 million euros yearly increase for immigrants integration

Title

In the 2016 state budget, the Government proposes a number of investments to facilitate a faster labour market integration for newly arrived immigrants. This includes more resources for validation efforts and an increase in the economic compensation to municipalities for refugee reception. The proposal is based on an agreement between the parties in power (Social Democrats and the Green Party) and the Left Party.

The investments will mean increased expenditures for integration of new arrivals with around 2 billion SEK (approximately 210 million EUR) annually during 2016-2019 the period. The additional expenditures are for labour market programs, the Employment Service, interpreters, vocational education, and language training. The validation efforts are strengthened for professionals and others with higher education. More resources are also invested in complementary courses at the universities.

Furthermore, the budget means an increase in the state compensation to the municipalities. From 1 January 2016, municipalities will receive 125,000 SEK per newcomer instead of the previous 83,100 SEK compensation.
