8. Conclusion
The mercury sphygmomanometer is disappearing from use, and there are many alternative devices. That said, blood pressure measurement using auscultation by a trained observer and the mercury sphygmomanometer remains the most accurate and reliable method for indirect measurement. To maintain quality of blood pressure measurements, it is recommended that mercury sphygmomanometers remain available as reference devices, until an alternative standard is developed and recognised.
