OBJECTIVES AND
CONTENTS OF THE PROJECT:
The purpose of this study is
to comprehensively investigate all identified or
suspected risk factors for hepatocellular
carcinoma (HCC) in Athens, with a focus on the
non-viral etiology of this malignancy. A total of
200 HCC cases will be included. Two hospitals
patients control series will be assembled : 100
metastatic liver cancer controls and 400 patients
hospitalized for diseases not related to HCC risk
factors. In addition, a third group of 100
community-based, hospital visitor controls will be
selected at the Athens site. Questionnaire data
will include medical history; smoking and alcohol

OBJECTIVES AND
CONTENTS OF THE PROJECT:
Euroscan is an European-wide
study on prevention of second primary tumors in
patients treated for cancer of the larynx, oral
cavity and lung. The occurence of second primary
tumors in these patients is in the range of 10-35%
and thus they represent a valuable group for the
testing of chemo-preventive measures. Moreover
these patients are already under strict follow-up
and are motivated to accept the extra burden of an
intervention plan. Euroscan covers all areas
intented by the programme : nutrition, protection
and chemoprevention.

Title of project
THE POTENTIAL ROLE OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS
VACCINES AND GENETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY SCREENING IN
THE PREVENTION OF ORO-PHARYNGEAL CANCER.
|
ORGANISATION:
INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR
RESEARCH ON CANCER (IARC)
150, Cours Albert Thomas
F-69372 LYON Cedex 08
Telephone:
+33/4/72.73.84.85
|
OBJECTIVES AND
CONTENTS OF THE PROJECT:
Cancer of the oral cavity
and oropharynx is a major and increasing public
health problem in Europe. Interventions to control
smoking and alcohol consumption have been largely
ineffective, and it is necessary to investigate
the potential of new preventive strategies.
Specific aims of this study are to clarify the
role of infection with specific types of human
papillomavirus (HPV) and to determine if specific
markers of genetic susceptibility to tobacco and
alcohol offer a potential as screening tools for
identification of individuals at particularly high
risk. This will be investigated by means of a
large multicentre case-control study incorporating
a good epidemiological design and reliable
measurements of HPV and other biomarkers. The size
of the study will also permit the analysis of
interactions with tobacco and alcohol consumption.

selected European countries, the standardized
mortality rates in males and females of primary
pleural tumours (PPT), pneumoconiosis (PN),
silicosis and asbestosis. To evaluate clusters of
PPT in administrative areas of European countries
and their variations over time, and depict
variations which exist within and between
countries. To apply age-period and age-cohort
models to the national rates of PPT to present and
interpret temporal variations of the disease. To
calculate and interpret standardized incidence
rates of mesothelioma by country, sex and
histological type in selected European Cancer

Cancer Specialists and Scientists. From EU
countries; two would specialize in childhood
cancers; all would be for 12 months. The fellows
would study EORTC experience in the conduct and
management of cancer clinical trials and
participate directly in trials work ; their
attachement to the Data Center would speed up the
dissemination and implementation of trials
results; and on returning home they would be able
to encourage and increase accrual to trials- both
directly and via educational multiplier effects -
thus improving the outcome for cancer patients
throughout the EU.

|
OBJECTIVES AND
CONTENTS OF THE PROJECT:
Epidemiological studies have
emphasized the major role played by diet in the
aetiology of large bowel cancer. Attempts to
identify causative or protective factors in
analytical, epidemiological and experimental
studies have led to some discrepancies. The time
has come to test the most important hypotheses
within the framework of intervention studies in
order to evaluate the possibilities of primary
prevention. The end point of intervention studies
cannot be invasive cancer itself. As there is
considerable evidence that a high proportion of
colorectal cancer arise in adenomas, adenoma
evidence recurrence and adenoma growth appear to
be one of the most appropriate end points. 10
countries involved.

of the stage coordinates including stop and
movement times using a new generation of
microscopes (HOME-Microscope). Experience and data
from this pilot project will be the basis to
discuss whether this type of process control can
be recommended for cervical cancer screening

OBJECTIVES AND
CONTENTS OF THE PROJECT:
Mammography as a screening
test for breast cancer has to meet quality
requirements that are very high in comparison to
clinical mammography. These requirements can only
be met when a comprehensive Quality Assurance (QA)
programme has been implemented. The current
version of the European Guidelines however does
not contain a section on the role of the
radiographer in the screening system and /or QA
requirements for radiographers. Radiographers have
a major influence on the quality of the imaging
process and the women's continued acceptance and
uptake of the service. It therefore stands to
reason that QA Guidelines for Radiography, one of
the key disciplines involved in the screening
process, should not be lacking in the European
Guidelines.

suivante :
- aspects organisationnels :
- système de gestion de
base de données;
- population-cibles;
- registres de population;
- système de convocations
ou de remise des tests.
- aspects médicaux :
- choix des tests;
- réalisation des

Telephone:

OBJECTIVES AND
CONTENTS OF THE PROJECT:
To develop an inventory of
previous, ongoing and planned studies in all
European countries that focus on treatment process
and outcome related aspects of quality of life in
childhood cancer. This review is to identify the
major possible domains which are likely to be
affected by the disease, the treatment and the QoL
paediatric cancer patients in the long term, and
to identify the available instruments to measure
these effects in an appropriate manner. This
systematic review is to prepare the ground for a
large scale longitudinal study in the main sites
of childhood cancer to investigate the effects of
diagnosis and treatment at the long term. If long
term effects prove to have a major impact on the
quality of life of survivors of childhood cancer,
then these aspects have to be taken into account
in order to offer the best clinical care to
children with cancer throughout Europe. 15
