The report seeks to analyse the current state and future development of knowledge exchange in the English Higher Education sector. It comes at a time when the role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in supporting economic growth and development has taken centre stage as governments around the world push for private-sector led, innovation driven economic recoveries from the current, deep economic downturn. Drawing on the rich evidence base provided by the institutional strategies submitted by HEIs to the Higher Education Funding Council for England as part of the HEIF funding programme, it aims to develop a detailed framework for understanding the many contributions they make to the economy and society.
