FARNET - the European Fisheries Areas Network

FARNET is the community of people implementing Community-Led Local Development (CLLD) under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). This network brings together Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs), managing authorities, citizens and experts from across the EU.

CLLD funding is delegated to local partnerships that bring together the private sector, local authorities and civil society organizations. Known as Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs), these partnerships fund local projects within the framework of a strategy, developed in response to specific needs and opportunities identified locally.

Continuing the area-based approach  initiated by Axis 4 of the European Fisheries Fund (EFF), CLLD under the EMFF brings new opportunities for local communities to tackle the multiple challenges faced by coastal and fisheries areas across the EU. Building on the 10.000+ projects supported in the 2007 – 2014 period, local communities will now also have the possibility to combine CLLD funds from the EMFF with those from other European Structural and Investment Funds: the European Social Fund (ESF), European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EARDF).

The FARNET Support Unit has been set up by the European Commission to assist in the implementation of CLLD under the EMFF. Working closely with the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), the member state administrations, the national fisheries areas networks, the FLAGs and others involved in the implementation of CLLD, the FARNET Support Unit strives to build a “learning network” that connects the growing knowledge and experience in CLLD from fisheries areas across Europe.
