The job vacancy rate (not seasonally adjusted) in the euro area[1] was 2.9 % in the first quarter of 2024, the same as in the last quarter of 2023 and down from 3.2 % in the first quarter of 2023. In the EU, the job vacancy rate was 2.6 % in the first quarter of 2024, the same as in the last quarter of 2023 and down from 2.9 % in the first quarter of 2023 as shown in Table 1 and Figure 4. Between the end of 2022 and the end of 2023, 18 EU countries registered a decrease in their debt to GDP ratio, and 9 EU countries and Norway registered an increase. The largest decreases were recorded in Portugal (-13.3 pp), Greece (-10.8 pp), Cyprus (-8.3 pp), Croatia (-4.8 pp) and Spain (-4.0 pp), while increases were recorded in Finland (+2.3 pp), Latvia (+1.8 pp), Romania (+1.3 pp), Estonia (+1.1 pp), Luxembourg and Belgium (both +0.9 pp), Bulgaria (+0.5 pp), Poland (+0.4 pp) and Lithuania (+0.2 pp), as well as Norway (+7.8 pp). From 2010 to 2013 and most notably over the 2010-2011 period, there was a significant outward shift in the Beveridge curves that may reflect disparities across EU Member States: most of the job vacancies were created in countries with comparatively low unemployment. In 2023, like in 2022, there are clear signs of the good recovery that are repeated in each month of 2023 where small decreases were registered in the total number of commercial flights (passengers, freight and mail) in the EU compared to the same month in 2019 (Figure 1). In the first six months of 2023, the recovery which started in 2022 continued with smaller decreases compared to the same month in 2019: from 17.5 % in January 2023 to 10.3 % in June 2023. Starting from July 2023, decreases below 10 % were registered for all months.
