Glossary:Police personnel
Employees of public agencies whose main tasks are: enforcement of laws and regulations, maintaining civil order, protecting people and property, and prevention, detection and investigation of crime.
Including: police officers, criminal detectives, traffic police, border police, gendarmerie, city guards and municipal police.
Excluding: customs officers, tax investigators, military police, secret services, police reserves, cadets, and court guards; and support staff such as secretaries and clerks.
Main types for crime statists:
- Preventive police personnel (example uniformed constable):
prevention of crimes and protection of public safety, such as community policing, area patrol, responding to emergencies, making arrests, issuing citations, traffic control, etc.
- Investigative police personnel (example plainclothes detective):
investigation of crimes after they have ocurred, such as gathering information, analysing evidence, interviewing witnesses, interrogating suspects, as well as technical forensic work.
