The European Big Data Hackathon is an event organised by the European Commission (Eurostat) which gathers teams from all over Europe to compete for the best data product combining official statistics and big data to support policy makers in one pressing policy question or statistical challenge facing Europe.
Date and venue
The Hackathon took place in Brussels from 9 to 12 March 2019 back to back with the NTTS 2019.
Participation in the Hackathon
Teams of three members were proposed by the National Statistical Institutes and included members of the national data science community, staff of the statistical office or a partnership of both.
Presentation at the NTTS 2019 and publication opportunities in JOS and EURONA
The prototypes developed at the Hackathon can be the subject of a scientific paper which, like in the case of NTTS papers, can be submitted for consideration for a special NTTS issue of the Journal of Official Statistics, as well as a special NTTS section of the Eurostat Review on National Accounts and Macroeconomic Indicators.
The winner and the two runners-up presented their prototypes at a plenary session of the NTTS 2019 conference.
