Reference metadata describe statistical concepts and methodologies used for the collection and generation of data. They provide information on data quality and, since they are strongly content-oriented, assist users in interpreting the data. Reference metadata, unlike structural metadata, can be decoupled from the data.

The data are collected by accredited bodies under ISO 17065. They are aggregated by the regional Public Administrations and compiled by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. Out-of-ratio yield checks are performed. Summation checks. Checks of variations of more than 10% with respect to the previous year.
11.2. Quality management - assessment
The checks have resulted in data revisions that have accounted for less than 1%.

15.3. Coherence - cross domain
The data collected by the IFS are not comparable.
In summary, the main differences could be due to the following causes:
- The form of data collection.
- The sources used (The IFS collects data on CAP eligible areas which results in smaller areas).
- The concept of exploitation and thresholds.
- Small differences in the interpretation of some variables (e.g. Permanent grassland) which may have a significant impact on the determination of the aggregate.
- The reference dates and the date of data collection.
Other statistics do not include separate data for organic production.

The cost to the Administration is about €7,000 per year. There is no cost or burden for the respondents as they are obliged to declare the data to their inspection body as stipulated in Regulation 2018/848.

18.1. Source data
The data are collected by the control bodies provided for in Regulation 2018/848 that have to certify organic producers. They are aggregated by the regional Public Administrations and collected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
18.2. Frequency of data collection
The data are collected on an ongoing basis by monitoring agencies. Each Regional Administration has a different frequency for collecting data from the control bodies. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food compiles the data once a year.
18.3. Data collection
The competent authorities for organic production in Spain are the Autonomous Communities (Regions). Each Competent Authority collects information from its Control Authority (public body) or Control Bodies authorized by the Competent Authority for organic production. The Control Bodies are companies, accredited under the UNE-EN-ISO/IEC 17065 standard. The Control Bodies and Control Authorities collect data from the operators they certify according to regulation 2018/848 on a continuous basis. According to the regulation the Control Bodies and Control Authorities have to audit the producer at least once a year, in addition to any unannounced inspections they deem appropriate.
In these audits all the operator's resources of production, surface areas, census, installations, production, invoices, accounting, etc. are checked. Certified operators belong to the entire food chain, primary production, processing and marketing.
18.4. Data validation
Out-of-ratio yield checks are performed. Summation checks. Checks of variations of more than 10% with respect to the previous year.
18.5. Data compilation
The aggregate calculation procedure is the sum of the excel forms submitted by the regional administrations. The aggregation is automated.
