One of the six Commission priorities for the period 2019-2024 is A Europe fit for the digital age. The strategy is built on three pillars: (1) technology that works for the people; (2) a fair and competitive digital economy; and (3) an open, democratic and sustainable society. The aim is to make the digital transformation work for people and businesses while helping to achieve the target of a climate-neutral Europe by 2050.

Moreover, in 2021, the Commission — in its Digital Compass — presented a vision and avenues for Europe’s Digital Decade – digital transformation by 2030, evolving around four cardinal points: skills, secure and sustainable digital infrastructures, digital transformation of businesses, and digitalisation of public services.

The broadband internet retail prices statistics are used to monitor the affordability of the connectivity in the EU. Statistics about broadband internet prices support monitoring of European Commission’s of the Digital Single Market strategy, launched in 2015 to lay the foundations of a united and sustainable European digital society.

4.1. Data description

The statistics on retail prices of broadband internet come from a study on Mobile and Fixed Broadband Prices in Europe commissioned by the European Commission DG Communications Networks, Content & Technology (DG CNECT).

These annual statistics show monthly retail prices of broadband internet in purchasing power parities in euro (PPP_EUR). The broadband internet prices statistics are broken down by type of offer, showing the level of prices for standardised offers of fixed, mobile and converged broadband services, taking into account download speeds or volumes of the internet service, as well as inclusion of fixed telephony services, TV services, mobile broadband internet access and mobile voice telephony. All offers are for private individuals and households - business packages are not included. The types of offers (baskets) defined follow the guidelines issued by Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) for European Benchmark of the pricing of bundles.

The broadband internet prices statistics are available for the following types of offers. The table also indicates if a type of offer has been available throughout the period of the available data, or if it has become obsolete or has been introduced in the monitoring of internet prices at a certain point of time.
