Reference metadata describe statistical concepts and methodologies used for the collection and generation of data. They provide information on data quality and, since they are strongly content-oriented, assist users in interpreting the data. Reference metadata, unlike structural metadata, can be decoupled from the data.
Data and metadata are transmitted to Eurostat by the Member States in the framework of the Unified Demographic Data Collection which is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 862/2007 and Regulation (EU) No 1260/2013 and their implementing regulations.
The regional breakdown of the Member States in the regional demographic tables is done under the most recent NUTS classification. There are agreements between Eurostat and Candidate countries as well as between Eurostat and EFTA countries, for which statistical regions have been coded in a way that resembles NUTS.
For more information on the versions in force, please see: Eurostat NUTS.

3.4.2 Statistical concepts and definitions used in the statistics disseminated in the National Statistical Institute's website
Population
To be counted as a resident, the person must have a permanent address in Denmark.
Live births
Children showing evidence of life (breathing etc.) irrespective of the duration of pregnancy.
Deaths
To be counted in the statistics concerning deaths, the person must have a permanent address in Denmark at the time of death.
Immigrants
Persons with an intended stay in Denmark of more than 3 months should have a residence permit. When they get one, they are considered as immigrants. Citizens of the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland) are considered as immigrants when they declare residence in Denmark. They do not need a residence permit.
In the published figures on migration in Denmark all occurrences are counted. That is, one person can be counted more than once if he or she has several immigrations and emigrations in the same year. That is not the case in the data delivered to Eurostat.
Intended stay of 12 months or more is not registered and therefore had to be calculated as actual duration of stay to fulfil Eurostat’s requirements.
The immigration data delivered to Eurostat is not published on a national level and should not be compared to national data due to the differences regarding duration of stay.
Emigrants
Persons who inform the authorities that they are moving abroad for more than six months and give up their residence in Denmark are considered as emigrants.
In the published figures on migration in Denmark all occurrences are counted. That is one person can be counted more than once if he or she has several immigrations and emigrations in the same year.
Intended emigration of 12 months or more is not registered and therefore had to be calculated as actual time the person was not in Denmark following emigration in order to fulfil Eurostat’s requirements.
The emigration data delivered to Eurostat is not published on a national level and should not be compared to national data due to the differences regarding duration of absence.
Acquisitions of citizenship
Changes in citizenship are recorded in the population register. A change from foreign to Danish citizenship that occurred during the reference year is counted as an acquisition of citizenship.
Loss of citizenship
Changes in citizenship are recorded in the population register. A change from Danish to foreign citizenship that occurred during the reference year is counted as loss of citizenship.
Legally induced abortions
Foetus delivered before the 22nd week of pregnancy, without evidence of life (breathing etc.).
Late foetal deaths
Foetus delivered after the 22nd week of pregnancy, without evidence of life (breathing etc.).
Infant deaths
Children below 1 year, who lived in Denmark at the time of death.
Marriages
At least one of the spouses must have a permanent address in Denmark at the time of the marriage to be counted as a marriage.
Divorces
At least one of the spouses must have a permanent address in Denmark at the time of the divorce to be counted as a divorce.

According to Article 4 (2) of the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 205/2014, each year Member States shall provide the Commission (Eurostat) with data at national and regional level as described in Annex II and related standard reference metadata (In the metadata structure definition defined for the Euro SDMX Metadata Structure) for the reference year within 12 months of the end of the reference year. According to Article 3 (2) of the Commission Regulation (EC) No 862/2007, Statistics on international migration, usually resident population and acquisition of citizenship shall be supplied to the Commission (Eurostat) within 12 months of the end of the reference year.
Statistics Denmark’s national releases about population and vital events are published about 5 weeks after the end of the reference period.
The migration data for UNIDEMO is special. It calculates actual duration and therefore ideally need a whole year after the end of the reference period. In UNIDEMO data on migration is processed 11 months after in order to be ready in time for Eurostat. Using 11 months instead of 12 months has a very limited effect and is not considered a problem.
