3.1. Data description
Monthly survey. Respondents are holdings with laying hens. Mainly electronic questionnaires filled in by respondents, postal questionnaires are exceptions. No sample survey, but threshold of 3000 places for laying hens.
Characteristics of the survey are the number of places for laying hens, the number of laying hens and the number of eggs produced (eggs for human consumption) - all according to the type of housing.

3.5. Statistical unit

3.6. Statistical population
agricultural holdings with at least 3000 places for laying hens
3.6.1. Physical, economical or other threshold(s) applied to the data collection
The threshold that agricultural holdings with at least 3000 places for laying hens are part of the survey is written down since 1992 in the national legal act that assigns responsibility as well as the authority for the collection, processing, and dissemination of statistics on eggs for consumption (also see item 6.1). Because of the national threshold agricultural holdings with less than 3000 places for laying hens are not part of the survey and thus not documented. With the aid of FSS data it's possible to roughly estimate the coverage for laying hens: about 95%. With a threshold of 5000 laying hens the coverage of the total national population of laying hens would be covered by about 85 to 90 % (also rough estimate on basis of FSS data).
3.6.1.1. COVERAGE

5.1. Reference period in calendar year based
Yes5.2. Reference date for number of laying hens
Being a monthly statistic in Germany, the reference date for number of laying hens is the last day of the respective reporting months, i.e. 31 December for reporting month December - concerning monthly results. But concerning results for the reporting year DE will only supply yearly average values on hens and places to EUROSTAT as these data are more stable over time and more meaningful in connection with the number of eggs over the year.
5.3. Additional comments on the reference period/date used
Concerning the reference period (respective calendar year) DE will only supply yearly average values on hens and places to EUROSTAT as these data are more stable over time and more meaningful in connection with the number of eggs over the year.

12.1. Relevance - User Needs
The main users of statistics are the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) and the Directorate-General for Agriculture of the European Communities, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the respective State ministries as well as scientific institutions. Furthermore Associations, advocacy groups, interested companies and private companies are users of this statistic too.
12.1.1. Data collected for national purposes
The results of these statistics are used for production forecasts and assessment of the market situation for the production of eggs for human consumption.
12.2. Relevance - User Satisfaction
"Not applicable (for the 2018 metadata collection)"
12.3. Completeness
Complete, all information requested in the ESS Agreement are collected and delivered to Eurostat.
13.1. Accuracy - overall
Overall accuracy is very good. No sample survey and therefore no sampling errors. Non-response errors possible. Actions to reduce non-response are regular reminders, follow-up interviews or legal actions. The degree of bias caused by non-response is insignificant.

15.1. Comparability - geographical
No comparability problems.
15.2. Comparability - over time
comparable time series since 2015 (methodological changes in 2015)
15.3. Coherence - cross domain
Number of laying hens from FSS includes all laying hens (hens producing eggs for human consumption and hens producing eggs intended for incubation). Thus the number on laying hens differ between those statistics.
15.4. Coherence - internal
"Not applicable (for the 2018 metadata collection)"
Burden on respondents: 30 minutes per survey with 12 surveys per year (due to monthly statistic) = 360 minutes per respondent per year.
About 1800 respondents.

18.1. Source data
Monthly survey. Respondents are holdings with laying hens. Mainly electronic questionnaires filled in by respondents, postal questionnaires are exceptions. No sample survey, but threshold of 3000 places for laying hens.
18.1.1. Description of data collection process
Mainly electronic questionnaires filled in by respondents, postal questionnaires are exceptions. No sample survey, but threshold of 3000 places for laying hens. No documentation of holdings with less than 3000 places for laying hens.
Because of german threshold of 3000 places for laying hens it is not possible to deliver data on size classes <3000 laying hens, i.e. >=350 to <3000. We therefore only provide data on size class >5000 laying hens and size class >=3000 to <=5000 laying hens and a total. We derive this information from micro data.
