Reference metadata describe statistical concepts and methodologies used for the collection and generation of data. They provide information on data quality and, since they are strongly content-oriented, assist users in interpreting the data. Reference metadata, unlike structural metadata, can be decoupled from the data.
Statistics on the production of eggs for consumption are collected in frame of the annual survey on poultry production. Figures represent the number of laying hens and the number of eggs for consumption produced in agricultural holdings keeping at least 5,000 laying hens.

3.4. Statistical concepts and definitions
Eggs for consumption are fresh eggs of fowls of the species Gallus Gallus intended for human consumption (i.e. not intended for incubation), in shell. They are fit for direct human consumption or for preparation of egg products.
Laying hens are fowls of domestic species Gallus gallus having reached laying maturity and kept for production of eggs for consumption. Pullets as well as fowls producing eggs intended for incubation are not considered here as laying hens.
Eggs producer is an agricultural holding with laying hens producing eggs for consumption during the reference period for economic purpose.
