European Observation Network for Territorial Development and Cohesion (ESPON)

Initiative summary description: The ESPON 2013 Programme is the European Observation Network for Territorial Development and Cohesion. It supports policy development related to EU Cohesion Policy.

Period of the initiative: ESPON 2013 Programme is from 2007-2013.

Role and priorities/objectives in knowledge transfer & innovation: Support policy development for territorial cohesion and a harmonious development of the European territory by: i) providing comparable information, evidence, analyses and scenarios on territorial dynamics; and ii) revealing territorial capital and potentials for development of regions and larger territories contributing to European competitiveness, territorial cooperation and a sustainable and balanced development. More specifically, ESPON focuses on:

1. Applied research on territorial development, competitiveness and cohesion.
2. Targeted analysis based on user demands/European perspective to different types of territories.
3. Scientific platform and tools/territorial indicators, data, analytical tools and scientific support.
4. Capitalisation, ownership and participation/capacity building, dialogue and networking.
5. Technical assistance, analytical support and communication plan.
