Statistics

The goal is to create a system for reliable and comparable data between the Member States on disabled persons and on their integration into social life. Comparable data will assist Member States and the Community to plan, monitor and evaluate initiatives taken at national and Community level.

In 1992/1993 Eurostat set up the first series of statistics on the characteristics and of the socio-economic situation of the population of disabled persons. Comparable statistics on disability matters from the Member States have been collected since 1994 by the European Community Household Panel (ECHP), set up within the European Statistical System.

In the beginning of 2001 a Eurobarometer study was carried out on the "Attitudes of Europeans towards Disability". This is one of the preparatory actions in relation to the year 2003 as the European Year of People with Disabilities.

In 1998-2002 statistics will be collected and developed within the Framework Programme for Community Statistical Actions. The focus will be on:

  • education
  • employment
  • data related to health and safety at work
  • health status
  • social protection

The Commission is interested gathering comparable statistics on health and safety at work and in various research. The Commission has set up an European Agency for Safety and Health at work. This cooperates with various other bodies regarding statistics on health and safety at work.
