RationaleThe main objective of MIRROR is to increase the proportion of girls participating in technology, especially in mechanical engineering, IT and electronics, by developing motivational education and increasing the appeal of opportunities in these industrial sectors. The project will create, test and implement new types of training and learning methods; it will also develop motivating learning materials for use in all levels of education. The utilisation of information technology as a natural part of the everyday life and learning of young girls will be supported. There will also be special training in ICT and e-learning provided for female teachers. The project seeks to increase the attractiveness of the mechanical engineering, IT and electronics industries by providing updated information. The aim is to increase the understanding of the opportunities offered today and in the future, by technology based industries. The target group covers young people, as well as their parents, teachers and study counsellors. The MIRROR project is divided into several subprojects which collaborate as a Development Partnership-DP at all levels of the education system. The project is actively collaborating with a range of Finnish partners as well as European partners from several countries in VOICES Transnational partnership. The project will publish its results and good practice for use throughout the EU.There is a persistently low participation of girls in technical education & training, especially in the disciplines of mechanical engineering, IT and electronics. This is one of the central concerns in the branch of the Ministry of Education as well. Previous research and practical experience has attributed reasons for this low participation to the perceptions girls have of technology and technical based jobs. Girls also consider education in these sub-jects to be dull and disinteresting. Perceptions such as these are important as they ulti-mately influence career choice, reducing the proportion of girls willing to work in these in-dustry sectors. Technology, like all other areas of life, needs the female perspective. The MIRROR project challenges old fashioned attitudes towards job segregation which claim that there are jobs better suited for men and conversely, jobs better suited for women. The MIRROR project aims to change attitudes by offering positive examples and role models as well as by de-veloping motivational education and learning methods. Agreement SummaryText available in MIRROR is parner in the Voices Transnational Partnership. VOICES will exploit the diversity of the individual DPs’ activities to capture the aspirations and experiences of a wide range of men and women who have contributed to overcoming gender and ethnic stereotyping in learning and work. These experiences and responses will enable the partnership to produce and publish a body of role models, and to capture attitudes and ideas about present stereotyping and future prospects from women and men affected, their families, careers counsellors, trainers and teachers and employers. All of this material will be shared freely between the partners and published in English. Individual partners will be responsible for translating the material they choose into other partnership languages. These reflections of direct experience will also be fed into the partnership’s final joint product, a catalogue, drawn from partners’ experiences, of promising approaches to combating gender and ethnic stereotyping. This process, and the development of other partnership activities, will be generated by a series of networking workshops, bringing together expert staff from each of the partners. These workshops will address specific themes and strands of activity that partner countries will be delivering. The intention is to provide forums where the actors from the partner countries can meet to generate and share ideas and approaches; where people can present information and answer questions; where good personal working relationships are fostered; where partner staff can outline next steps. The workshops will be a major channel to allow the planning and progress of the different strands of cooperation viz the exchange of trainees/trainers/staff, the joint development, import, export and adoption of new approaches, the parallel development of innovative approaches and the exchange of information and experiences. These workshops will filter the most promising approaches and types of action, carefully evaluating the measures and processes used and taking into account individual national contexts.
