Information society is a challenge for labour intensive female branches. The possibilities to create innovations in new information based economy depend on enterprises’ ICT facilities as well as on their personnel’s capability to use the facilities. For SMEs of knitwear, clothing and other sewing industries in Finland, these are hard challenges to adapt. After the structural renewals of the 90’s, most of the enterprises are firms with less than 10 employees. SMEs have lack of ICT facilities and human resources. Also ageing of the personnel in the branch as a whole has reduced feasibilities to adapt the changes informational economy brings. To introduce new technological practices means transformations in SMEs competition vs. cooperation strategies. Cooperation, e.g. via internet, can bring advantages and helps to innovate new ways of combining remote resources. ICT based networking improves the competitiveness of SMEs.SMEs have very little training capacities to guide the workers to cope with IC technology. The technical infrastructure also varies. Due to the lack of ADP-equipment, garment and sewing textile employees have more deficient possibilities to acquire soft ware skills at work than employees in other branches of industry. Building networks between vocational training organizations and enterprises can help employees to get acquainted with new technology. Ageing personnel of the branch has quite a modest educational background. The median age of employees in textile enterprises is 44 years, in clothing enterprises 48 years, and among clerical employees in both of them, 43 years. Ageing is a special challenge for clothing enterprises: every forth of the employees is between 50 and 54 years of age. For employees, these circumstances make it difficult to sustain employability and cope with technological changes at work. There are many SMEs that regard the ageing work force as a respected and skilled resource of production. Anyhow, it is important to increase the awareness of ageing resources. Transferring skills and knowledge between generations helps to include oneself into information society and to use its services.
The aim of the DP is to create and develop action models and technological practices that will enhance Finnish knitwear, clothing and other sewing SMEs’ competitiveness and sustain employability of personnel, esp. ageing workers. Taitava tevanake / TexIT project is devided into six sub-projects. Sub-projects are directed at special themes of increasing the introduction of ITC facilities and resources. In general, development activities are concerned with promoting ICT skills and resources of SMEs as well as building networks to strengthen the knowledge and skills resources of them. The themes of the sub-projects are ··
- promoting international co-operation in production, ·
- integrating ICT into marketing, ·
-transferring knowledge between generations·-
- database of guiding seniors’ specialist knowledge ·
- SMEs’ production management procedure·
- age, women and ICT in structural changes.

The project participates in national networking based on adaptability theme. By way of transnational co-operation according to TCA the project also shares experiences in sectoral-spefic development on European level. Networking with transnational partners offers a mutual learning forum on the possibilities of introducing and utilizing new technology in a female and labour intensive branch dominated by glocally operating SMEs.

Main products of the project are new models of utilizing IC-technology in small and medium-size enterprises’ operations. New models of action consist of using high tech in marketing, in design development and producing high quality brand products, in financial management, as well as in sharing and transferring know-how of the sector.

The agreement signed by three partners states the mutual interests of developing new technology in textile, clothing, leather and footware manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises. The DP-project aims to support enterprises and their personnel to introduce information and communication technology in adaptation to informationalizing economy. The main developmental tasks of the project are (a) to promote ICT-skills, resources as well as facilities of SMEs, (b) to encourage inter-generational learning, and (c) to increase networking. The action plan consists of six sub-projects. The partners have agreed on division of tasks and responsibilities as well as on participation, co-operation and decision making among partners. University of Tampere, Work Reseach Centre coordinates the project and carries out a follow-up study. TEVANAKE Centre consults and supports SMEs in introducing IC-technology and in training to utilize new facilities. The Finnish Textiles and Garment Workers’ Union encourages its members to take part in the project and organizes training in basic ICT-know-how. A board with representatives from the partners and project’s target groups follows, guides and conducts the progress of the project. It also evaluates the quality of the development and study processes and the products of the project.

Founded in 1988, Work Research Centre (WRC) is a unit of the University of Tampere Research Institute for Social Sciences (RISS). The Centre was set up with the aim of promoting research in various aspects of work and working life as well as to support post-graduate training and extension studies in its special fields. Work Research Centre has a solid tradition in applied research, mostly on the qualitative aspects of working life. Its specific aim is to promote interaction between academic research and long-term contractual research, which serves the actual needs for information and knowledge society. Many of the research projects are action and intervention studies, in which the researchers get involved in the development of the work organization. With a staff of approximately 40, of whom 30 are researchers, the WRC is the biggest unit of its kind in this particular field of study in Finland.
