Objective of the project (native language):

Evaluar el impacto de prácticas sostenibles y digitales sobre la producción avícola en España así como analizar la propensión a pagar por el consumidor por dichas mejoras. Se persigue estudiar los efectos de nuevas estrategias nutricionales sobre el bienestar animal y la sostenibilidad agroambiental en diferentes sistemas productivos de gallinas ponedoras
y pollos de engorde, así como sus efectos sobre la calidad de los productos finales (huevos y carne). También , se pretende desarrollar nuevas herramientas digitales abiertas que faciliten la cuantificación y el seguimiento conjunto de distintos parámetros de bienestar animal y sostenibilidad en las explotaciones avícolas.

Objective of the project (in English):

To evaluate the impact of sustainable and digital practices on poultry production in Spain as well as to analyze the propensity to pay by the consumer for such improvements. The aim is to study the effects of new nutritional strategies on animal welfare and agro-environmental sustainability in different production systems of laying hens and broilers, as well as their effects on the quality of final products (eggs and meat). It is also intended to develop new open digital tools that facilitate the quantification and joint monitoring of different parameters of animal welfare and sustainability in poultry farms.

The main results of the project are described from the three dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental and social) as well as the main practical recommendations:

1- Economic sustainability

The aim is to achieve an improvement in the profitability of egg and chicken meat producers at the national level, through the implementation of new nutritional strategies such as the use of feeds that incorporate bio-additives to reduce antibiotic resistance and feeds that incorporate alternatives to soybeans. In this way, producers would achieve significant savings by reducing the use of antibiotics and raw materials such as soybeans.

In addition, bioadditive feeds significantly improve the intestinal health of the birds and, consequently, the welfare of the animals, so a reduction in the mortality rate of newly hatched chicks is expected. Thus, the techniques proposed in the project have an impact on the optimization of the use of resources, productivity and a more sustainable management of the farms.

Moreover, the project contemplates testing the new nutritional strategies in birds raised in extensive and semi-intensive systems in the case of laying hens, and from slow-growing strains in the case of broilers in line with new market demands in terms of animal welfare and sustainability. Therefore, responding to the real needs of consumers can be a business opportunity for producers, making family farms more resilient to current and future market volatility.

Se describen los principales resultados del proyecto desde las tres dimensiones de la sostenibilidad (económica, medioambiental y social) así como las principales recomendaciones prácticas:

1- Sostenibilidad económica

Se pretende alcanzar una mejora de la rentabilidad de los productores de huevo y de carne de pollo a nivel nacional, por medio de la implementación de nuevas estrategias nutricionales como el uso de piensos que incorporen bioaditivos para reducir la resistencia a antibióticos y piensos que incorporen alternativas a la soja. De esta forma, los productores lograrían un ahorro significativo al reducir el empleo de antibióticos y materias primas como la soja.

Además, los piensos con bioaditivos mejoran notablemente la salud intestinal de las aves y, en consecuencia, el bienestar de los animales, por lo que se prevé una reducción de la tasa de mortalidad de los pollitos recién nacidos. Así, las técnicas planteadas en el proyecto tienen un impacto sobre la optimización en el uso de recursos, productividad y una gestión más sostenible de las explotaciones.

Más aún , el proyecto contempla testar las nuevas estrategias nutricionales en aves criadas en sistemas extensivos y semi-intensivos en el caso de gallinas ponedoras, y procedentes de estirpes de crecimiento lento en el caso de pollos de engorde en línea con las nuevas demandas del mercado en materia de bienestar animal y sostenibilidad. Por lo tanto, responder a las necesidades reales de los consumidores, puede suponer una oportunidad de negocio para los productores, haciendo más resilientes a las explotaciones familiares frente a la volatilidad del mercado actual y futuro.

In conclusion, if the project's techniques were widely implemented, it would position national poultry farmers in a niche market in continuous growth, promoting their leadership at international level against natural competitors such as the USA in meat poultry farming or China in laying poultry farming.

2- Environmental sustainability

It is expected that the new nutritional strategies proposed in the project from the perspective of bio-additives and antibiotic resistance tests will lead to a significant reduction in the use of these products. In this way, the health of the state livestock sector and, specifically, in poultry farming, will be improved by combating bacterial infections in animals and reducing the risk of transmission to humans and the environment.

On the other hand, the aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from participating poultry farms by reducing the use of soy in poultry feed. Soybeans have a high carbon footprint, and local alternatives such as peas, rapeseed and sunflower will be tested.

En conclusión, si las técnicas del proyecto se llevaran a la práctica de forma generalizada, se conseguiría posicionar a los avicultores nacionales en un nicho de mercado en continuo crecimiento, fomentando su liderazgo a nivel internacional frente a los competidores naturales como EE.UU. en la avicultura de carne o China en avicultura de puesta.

2- Sostenibilidad medioambiental

Se espera que las nuevas estrategias nutricionales propuestas en el proyecto desde la perspectiva de los bioaditivos y los ensayos de resistencia frente a antibióticos, conduzcan a una reducción significativa del uso de estos productos. De esta forma, se conseguiría mejorar la salud del sector ganadero estatal y, en concreto, en avicultura, combatiendo las infecciones bacterianas en animales y reduciendo el riesgo de transmisión a los seres humanos y al medio ambiente.

Por otro lado, se pretende reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero de las explotaciones avícolas participantes gracias a la reducción del empleo de soja en la alimentación de las aves. La soja lleva asociada una elevada huella de carbono y se testarán alternativas autóctonas nacionales como el guisante, la colza o el girasol.

Finally, this project aims to advance in the promotion and understanding of animal welfare, both in poultry farms and in the livestock sector in general, through the identification and quantification of animal welfare parameters in the collaborating farms. In addition, the aim is to directly involve the poultry farmers themselves through the development of an open digital tool that allows the monitoring of these parameters at the field level. In this way, the aim is to enable them to manage their farms themselves, improving the welfare of their animals.

In addition to the positive impacts on the environment mentioned above, if the techniques tested in this project were implemented, poultry farmers would achieve compliance with climate objectives and the increasingly restrictive State and European regulations of the agri-food sector in terms of animal welfare and sustainability.

It is also expected to gain the support of consumers by demanding improvements in animal welfare and sustainability in the food they buy, thus improving producers' sales. The propensity of consumers to opt for such products will be tested in the project by means of surveys and sensory workshops.

Finally, the project will contribute to the development of the Spanish poultry meat and laying sector with innovation as a growth engine.

Finalmente, a través del presente proyecto se persigue avanzar en el fomento y la comprensión del bienestar animal, tanto en las explotaciones avícolas como en el sector ganadero en general, por medio de la identificación y cuantificación de parámetros de bienestar animal en las granjas colaboradoras. Además, se persigue involucrar directamente a los propios avicultores mediante el desarrollo de una herramienta digital en abierto que permita el seguimiento de estos parámetros a pie de campo. De esta manera, se busca que ellos mismos puedan gestionar sus explotaciones mejorando el bienestar de sus animales.

Además de los impactos positivos sobre el medioambiente mencionados, si se implementaran las técnicas ensayadas en el presente proyecto, los avicultores lograrían el cumplimiento de los objetivos climáticos y las normativas Estatales y Europeas del sector agroalimentario en materia de bienestar animal y sostenibilidad, cada vez más restrictivas en estos aspectos.

Asimismo, se espera conseguir el apoyo de los consumidores al demandar mejoras en materia de bienestar animal y sostenibilidad en los alimentos que adquieren, mejorando así las ventas de los productores. Dicha propensión de los consumidores a apostar por tales productos será testada en el proyecto por medio de encuestas y talleres sensoriales.

Por último, se contribuiría al desarrollo del sector avícola español de carne y de puesta con la innovación como motor de crecimiento.

It is also planned to carry out a series of internal and external dissemination activities related to the different thematic areas addressed by the project (sustainability; animal welfare; resource optimization; environmentally friendly production). The purpose is both to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences among the members of the operative group, and to bring the key agents of the agri-food chain closer to such a relevant issue as livestock sustainability and responsible consumption.

In conclusion, by implementing the project's techniques, the innovative character of poultry farms and the agri-food sector will be increased in order to achieve the dynamism and modernization of the rural world as a whole.

In addition, thanks to the project's dissemination plan carried out by the participating members, the aim is to make the poultry sector more visible to the general public, as well as to communicate the progress and results of the project with the innovative techniques proposed, which may be of interest to producers and even be reproduced on their farms.

Finally, the project aims to provide field-tested conclusions on the most innovative nutritional solutions in terms of antibiotic reduction, soy alternatives and differentiated feeding, which could contribute to improve the policy decision-making process related to livestock sustainability (e.g. PAC2023-2027; PNIEC 2021-2030). This could lead to the design of more effective and efficient policies for resource management that could favor poultry producers.

Asimismo, se prevé la realización de una serie de actividades divulgativas de carácter interno y externo relativas a las distintas áreas temáticas que aborda el proyecto (sostenibilidad; bienestar animal; optimización de recursos; producciones respetuosas con el medioambiente). El propósito es tanto fomentar el intercambio de conocimiento y experiencias entre los miembros del grupo operativo, como acercar a los agentes clave de la cadena agroalimentaria una cuestión tan relevante como es la sostenibilidad ganadera y el consumo responsable.

En conclusión, mediante la implementación de las técnicas del proyecto, se conseguiría incrementar el carácter innovador de las explotaciones avícolas y del sector agroalimentario para un lograr el dinamismo y modernización del mundo rural en su conjunto.

3- Social sustainability

It is expected to promote the active participation of local poultry producers with four professional commercial laying hen farms in aviaries and free-range houses, also encouraging the participation of young people and equality between men and women both in the technical team of the project and in the poultry farmers participating in the trials. This strategy makes it possible to face some of the main challenges of the agri-food sector and the rural world, such as masculinization and rural depopulation.

Furthermore, the aim is to involve end consumers in activities related to sustainable livestock farming and responsible food with a "farm-to-table" approach in order to analyze their propensity to pay for chicken meat and eggs obtained from the practices contemplated in the project.

In this way, it is expected to improve consumer education on sustainability and animal welfare in state livestock farming, as well as raise awareness of the importance of animal nutrition to supply healthy and quality food to the population, influencing their decision when purchasing products. This entails an economic benefit for producers by improving their image to the public, thus improving sales, as mentioned in point 2.

3- Sostenibilidad social

Se espera fomentar la participación activa de productores avícolas locales con cuatro granjas comerciales profesionales de gallinas ponedoras en aviarios y camperas, incentivando, además, la participación de jóvenes y la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres tanto en el equipo técnico del proyecto como en los avicultores participantes de los ensayos . Esta estrategia permite enfrentar algunos de los principales retos del sector agroalimentario y del mundo rural como son la masculinización y el despoblamiento rural.

Más aún, se pretende involucrar a consumidores finales en actividades relacionadas con la ganadería sostenible y la alimentación responsable con enfoque "de la granja a la mesa" para analizar su propensión a pagar por la carne de pollo y los huevos obtenidos a partir de las prácticas contempladas en el proyecto.

De esta forma, se espera mejorar la formación de los consumidores sobre la sostenibilidad y el bienestar animal en la ganadería estatal, así como sensibilizar sobre la importancia de la nutrición animal para abastecer de alimentos saludables y de calidad a la población, influyendo en su decisión a la hora de adquirir los productos.
