Objective of the project (native language):

Die moderne Tierhaltung und sich verändernde legistische Rahmenbedingungen stellen viehhaltende Betriebe in den Bereichen Wirtschaftsdüngerlogistik, Luft-, Grundwasser- und Bodenschutz, Nährstoffeffizienz und soziale Akkzeptanz vor neue Herausforderungen. Es braucht neuartige Verfahren und Methoden, welche ein sozialverträgliches, umwelt- und bodenschonendes Düngen ermöglicht. In Projekt wird ein innovatives und mobiles Gesamtverfahren entwickelt und hinsichtlich der Parameter Durchführbarkeit, Wirtschaftlichkeit und Wirksamkeit untersucht. Langfristig soll das Projekt damit einen Beitrag zur sozial- und umweltverträglichen Landwirtschaft leisten. 

Objective of the project (in English):

Modern animal husbandry as well as changing legal frameworks confront livestock farms with new challenges in the areas of manure logistics, air, groundwater and soil protection, nutrient efficiency and social acceptance. New processes and methods are therefore needed that enable an environmental and soil-friendly fertilisation. By combining two established methods of manure processing, this project will develop and test an innovative process. The mobile plant will be investigated with regard to the parameters feasibility, economic efficiency and effectiveness. In the long term, the aim of the project is to make a contribution to socially and environmentally compatible agriculture.

Im Projekt wird ein neuartiges Verfahren zur Aufbereitung von Wirtschaftsdünger im Hinblick auf Durchführbarkeit, Wirtschaftlichkeit und Wirksamkeit getestet. Wesentliche Projektschritte sind:
- Planung und Entwicklung einer mobilen Gülleaufbereitungsanlage inklusive unterschiedlicher Versuchsreihen (pflanzenbauliche Praxisversuche, olfaktorische Messungen etc.)
- Durchführung und unter anderem technische und wirtschaftliche Evaluierung der Gülleaufbereitung
- Überprüfung der Wirksamkeit der Maßnahme hinsichtlich Nitratverlagerung und Düngewirkung
- Auswertung, Aufbereitung und Verbreitung der Ergebnisse

Description of activities (in English):

The project will test a new process for the treatment of manure in terms of feasibility, efficiency and effectiveness. Essential project steps are:
- Planning and development of a mobile liquid manure processing plant including different plant cultivation trials
- Implementation and its technical and economic evaluation of manure treatment
- Review of the effectiveness of the measure in terms of nitrate shifting and fertilisation effect
- Evaluation, processing and distribution of the results

The expected results are as follows:
1. the development of a practical, inexpensive and mobile method of processing farm manure.
2. to improve the nutrient efficiency of the liquid manure while at the same time relieving the burden on farmers in the course of fertilisation.

4. improving social acceptability by reducing odour emissions

For the agricultural sector in Austria, challenges in the field of manure logistics, resource efficiency and environmental compatibility are to be met with a financially viable, goal-oriented and operationally flexible method. The production of three independent fertiliser components (ammonium sulphate, solid separated manure, ammonium removed manure) enables farmers to make their fertiliser management more flexible in terms of time. This opens up new possibilities for many farmers to react adequately and flexibly to unforeseeable weather events, legislative restrictions, logistically caused and operationally individual work peaks and the resulting shortage of storage space. It is expected that this liquid fertilizer, due to its high nutrient concentration, can be applied in a plant-physiologically reasonable and timely specific manner with less effort. By converting ammonium, which is a source of emissions, into a stable form of fertilizer, the social acceptance of the application of agricultural manure should be increased.

Die zu erwartenden Ergebnisse lauten wie folgt:
1. Bereitstellung eines praktisch umsetzbaren, kostengünstigen und mobilen Verfahrens zur Wirtschaftsdüngeraufbereitung.
2. Verbesserung der Nährstoffeffizienz der Gülle bei gleichzeitiger Entlastung der Landwirte im Zuge der Düngung.
3. Verringerung der Grundwasserbelastung und der Ammoniakemissionen
4. Verbesserung der Sozialverträglichkeit durch Reduktion der Geruchsemissionen

Für den landwirtschaftlichen Sektor in Österreich sollen Herausforderungen im Bereich der Wirtschaftsdüngerlogistik, Ressourceneffizienz und der Umweltverträglichkeit mit einer finanziell tragbaren, zielführenden und betrieblich flexiblen Methode bewältigt werden. Durch die Herstellung von drei voneinander unabhängigen Düngerkomponenten (Ammoniumsulfat, Festseparat, Ammonium entfrachtete Gülle) können Landwirten ihr Düngeregime zeitlich flexibler gestalten. Dadurch erschließen sich für viele LandwirtInnen neue Möglichkeiten, um auf unvorhersehbare Wetterereignisse, gesetzliche Einschränkungen, logistisch bedingte und betrieblich individuell auftretende Arbeitsspitzen und die damit verbundene Lagerraumknappheit adäquat und flexibel reagieren zu können. Es wird erwartet, dass dieser Flüssigdünger auf Grund seiner hohen Nährstoffkonzentration unter geringerem Aufwand pflanzenphysiologisch sinnvoll und zeitlich gezielt eingesetzt werden kann. Durch die Überführung des emissions- und damit ge-ruchsgefährdeten Ammoniums in eine stabile Düngerform soll die Sozialverträglichkeit im Umgang mit Wirtschaftsdünger gesteigert werden.

Description of the context of the project:

Currently, 94 % of the total ammonia emissions in Austria are caused by agriculture. 50 % of this is due to the spreading of manure. The Austrian groundwater is already polluted by agricultural fertilizers in some areas. In addition, the requirements of the NEC Directive and the NAP Regulation are putting further pressure on agricultural farms. The intensification of livestock farming and the resulting increase in livestock numbers in conjunction with the legal restriction of application times confront farms with numerous challenges. Fertilisation must therefore be carried out in spring under enormous time pressure on farmers, even under unfavourable weather conditions. As a result, they contribute to a higher environmental impact and do not operate in a soil-compatible manner. In addition, high level of odour pollution is becoming more and more a topic of the public debate. Farmers are therefore confronted with the conflicting priorities of environment, society and economic agriculture. For these reasons, innovative approaches and methods are needed which enable environmentally, soil-friendly and socially acceptable fertilisation of agricultural soils. At present, already developed methods are mainly solutions for large farms and do not meet the requirements of Austria's small-scale agriculture. Therefore, solutions have to be found which correspond to the diverse farm structure of Austrian agriculture.
