Description of the session
Assessing fiscal risks from climate change is a critical and challenging issue. The session will illustrate the potential macroeconomic and fiscal consequences of climate change in the EU and stress the relevance of taking large-scale, rapid, and immediate climate mitigation and adaptation measures to reduce countries’ exposure and vulnerabilities.

Nicola Gagliardi is Economic Analyst at the European Commission, Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs.
He holds an MRes in Quantitative Economics from the European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics (ECARES, SBS-EM) of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He has published on topics related to the labour market, international trade, and productivity analysis and has contributed to publications on population ageing, debt sustainability analysis, and the economics of climate change. His current work is focused on issues of long-term fiscal sustainability, with particular reference to the analysis of the fiscal risks related to climate change.

Anna Dimitrijevics is deputy head of unit for Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change in DG CLIMA. She coordinates the implementation of the EU Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change, a truly collaborative effort involving over 20 Commission departments. With her colleagues and jointly with the European Environment Agency, she also oversees the preparation of the first-ever European Climate Risk Assessment that is scheduled for publication in April 2024.
Anna has worked on the macroeconomic impacts of climate change previously in DG ECFIN. Prior to joining the Commission, Anna was a research fellow at Queens’ College, University of Cambridge, and worked as a consultant to the World Bank in the USA on disaster risk reduction. Anna gained her doctoral and other degrees at the University of Oxford. She has done fieldwork in Mexico, Thailand, India and Serbia
