About the event
On March 7 2017, a two hour live Webinar, followed by an interactive Q&A session, was held to provide information on the meaning of being eIDAS compliant, give an update from the Member States on the status of eIDAS electronic identification (eID), and illustrate some use cases as well as key technological developments in the field of eID.
The event was also an opportunity for identity providers and consumers of eID services to explain and exchange their eID activities in the context of eIDAS. In general, the session was an opportunity to explore potential collaboration between the public and private sectors in regard to eIDAS eID.
Organised by the European Commission, in collaboration with the Member States, this public event was of particular interest to eIDAS Member State representatives, EU policy makers, identity providers, attribute providers and users of eID services.
Participants to this webinar learnt about:
- The meaning of being eIDAS compliant;
- The eID eIDAS status in the Member States;
- Concrete examples and use cases by identity and service providers;
- Key technological trends impacting electronic identification;
- Potential collaboration and synergies between different stakeholders.

About the presenters:
Elena Alampi-das Neves Moreira is acting as Policy Officer at the DG CONNECT – eGovernment and Trust Unit within the European Commission in Brussels. She is responsible of the implementation and uptake of eIDAS Regulation (EU) N°910/2014. The purpose of the Regulation is to deliver a predictable regulatory environment for electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market to boost user convenience, trust and confidence in the digital world.
Joao Rodrigues Frade is an Enterprise Architect in the European Commission, specialising in large eGovernment projects. In the last 15 years, Joao has participated in the development, implementation, deployment and evolution of the most important Trans-European Systems of the European Union. He is currently heading the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Building Blocks sector in the Directorate-General for Informatics (DIGIT).
Alice Vasilescu is acting as Policy Officer at the Directorate-General for Informatics of the European Commission. She is coordinating the technical work carried out under CEF eID and supports the Member State community that is setting up the eIDAS eID Infrastructure. Alice is an experienced IT professional, specializing in Enterprise Architecture, IT security and system interoperability for large-scale European projects.
Michaël de Boer works as IT Services Officer at the Directorate-General for Informatics of the European Commission. He coordinates the development of the Digital Signature Services (DSS) open-source library and Trusted List Manager software under the Connecting Europe Facility's eSignature building block.
Licínio Kustra Mano is an eHealth Interoperability consultant in DG SANTE leading the CEF eHealth DSI Solution Provider team delivering the DSI core services as well as supporting the orchestration of MS deployment activities regarding the National Contact Points for eHealth.
Jeremy Grant is a Managing Director at The Chertoff Group, where he works with the Firm’s clientele to develop growth strategies, identify market solutions and advise on policy impacts across the information technology, transactions and cybersecurity sectors. In this role, Mr. Grant utilizes his diverse background and deep understanding of business, technical and policy issues around identity, privacy and cybersecurity, having served in a range of leadership positions spanning government and industry. Prior to joining The Chertoff Group, Mr. Grant established and led the National Program Office for the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC), the first new cybersecurity program launched by the Obama Administration.
Marta Ienco is Head of Governments and Regulatory Affairs of the GSM Association, the global trade association of GSM mobile operators, which mission is to act as a guiding beacon for the mobile industry, focusing on activities where collective action can deliver significant benefits. In this role, she works closely with operators to provide strategic advice and insights at on the key regulatory and policy issues facing mobile identity solutions.
Gautam Hazari is the Technical Director for the Personal Data program at GSMA and is the Chief Architect for the Mobile Connect proposition. He works with the mobile operators around the world on mobile identity and also with the extended industry, standards and regulatory bodies on the identity ecosystem. Gautam has been working in the telecom industry for the last 20 years on various domains including Identity, Network APIs, M2M, Charging and Payments, NFC, Security etc. and holds patents on Identity and access control area.
Pascal Nizri is the Founder and CEO of Chekk.me, a digital identity start-up. With Chekk.me individuals are empowered to own their digital identity and control what data they share. Businesses get a secure platform for seamless customer interactions and data requests (eg., banks' KYC at on-boarding and refresh; travel bookings; online stores; government interactions with citizen; etc.). Pascal has over 15 years experience in the Financial Industry, having worked across geographies (France, UK, Hong-Kong, Australia, Indonesia), disciplines (strategy, business, technology, digital), and positions (Global Chief of Staff for Retail Banking, Chief Operating Officer for Retail Banking & Wealth Management in countries).
Dan Johnson is Deputy Head of Group Customer Data Strategy at HSBC. Dan’s career spans 20 years predominantly in Financial Services, but includes working within the commercial and public sectors. Originally a COBOL programmer and software tester, Dan has designed and managed the delivery of number of systems and solutions. He now leads a global strategy and design team concentrating on re-imagining customer data management. In his spare time, Dan is an Assistant Cub Scout Leader, model railway enthusiast, husband and father of two.
Jörg Jessen has been working as a lecturer for the Department of Computer Science and IT-Security at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences since 2014. He has been the Managing Director for AUTHADA, a spin-off from university, since 2016. Jörg has gained over 20 years of experience in information technology and security, having served in various leadership positions with Citigroup, SCOR, Argus and now AUTHADA. Besides his management roles, Jörg was actively driving some research topics and is a serial founder in the fields of biometrics - computer linguistics and speech recognition in addition to biotechnology. Jörg was awarded for the IT Innovation of the Year in 2001 by the Federal Ministry of Research and Development. And in 2003, he received the Computer Weekly Award for Safe Speech Recognition over the phone.
About CEF eID under eIDAS
The CEF eID building block helps public administrations and private online service providers to easily extend the use of their online services to citizens from other EU Member States. It allows cross-border authentication, in a secure, reliable and trusted way, by making national electronic identification systems interoperable.
Once this building block is deployed in a Member State, the mutual recognition of national eIDs becomes possible between participating Member States, in line with the eIDAS (electronic Identification and Signature) legal framework (see eIDAS Regulation (EU) 910/2014) and with the privacy requirements of all the participating countries. Mutual recognition of national eIDs allows citizens of one Member State to access online services provided by public and private organisations from other participating EU Member States, using their own national eID.
Following the successful completion of the STORK pilot programme, CEF has taken on the role to 'productise' and support the roll-out of eID connectivity to other Member States. This has included the development of open-source software components, documentation, training and support. Member States can leverage their electronic ID systems to provide access to the services of other Member States with confidence in the levels of assurance provided by secure means of authentication linked to qualified identities.
About the CEF building blocks
The CEF building blocks provide basic services which can be reused to enable more complex digital public services offered to citizens, businesses and public administration. They provide reusable tools and services helping to underpin the Digital Single Market, that aims to remove digital regulatory barriers, contributing as much as EUR 415 billion per year to the European economy. The CEF Digital Portal is the home of the CEF building blocks (eID, eDelivery, eInvoicing, eSignature and eTranslation). It is the one-stop-shop for information about the building blocks. The portal provides access to tools, services and software that facilitates the deployment of eID to access digital public services across borders.
