The decision by separatist organisation ETA to definitively cease its armed activity was welcomed Friday by Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström, who called it "a historic and most welcome development".
"I strongly hope that this decision from ETA will bring lasting peace and reconciliation to citizens who, for far too long, have been held hostages by violence", Malmström wrote in a blog entry. She also called for the cessation of armed activity to be carried out through a credible and verifiable process.
