Today, sixty years have passed since the signature of the Geneva Convention on Refugees, which has helped millions of men, women and children fleeing persecution, wars and torture, to secure protection and the prospect of a brighter future. As the world remains scarred by conflicts new and old, EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström writes today in European newspapers, together with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres, that it is crucial that Europe remains true to its values and obligations, and that the EU should commit to do more to protect and find solutions for the displaced and persecuted.
