Poland in the limelight

8 July 2011

On 1 July Poland took over the EU Presidency of the Council of Ministers from Hungary. As usual in the beginning of each new EU Presidency the college of Commissioners go to the country's capital to meet with the government. Together with her Commissioner colleagues, Cecilia Malmström is spending the day in Warsaw.

"Prime Minister Donald Tusk delivered a much appreciated speech in the European Parliament on Wednesday where he emphasised the importance of standing up for the European cooperation and our European values, and not giving in to nationalist and populist movements. It is not common to hear such words from European leaders today, and I warmly welcome it. I think this will be a very good presidency", said Cecilia Malmström.

During today's visit in Warsaw Cecilia Malmström will meet with, among others, Minister for Interior Jerzy Miller to discuss issues of common interest. Read more on the Commission's visit to Poland on the website of the Polish EU Presidency, www.pl2011.eu.

Already on Monday Cecilia Malmström will go back to Warsaw, this time for a conference on the Common European Asylum System. On 18-19 July she will travel to the Polish town of Sopot for the informal ministerial meeting with the EU Ministers of the Interior.
