Malmström back from Cairo

25 March 2011

EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström was in Cairo yesterday together with the Hungarian EU Presidency. She met with NGOs, UNCHR, and IOM to discuss the current refugee situation and the possibility to form a future Egyptian asylum and migration policy. Her meeting with the Egyptian Minister of Interior Mr Mansur El-Essawi resulted in the setting up of a working group to discuss future EU-Egypt areas of cooperation.

"We need to have a two-fold approach, where we assist Egypt in dealing with the current situation, but at the same time look ahead and see where we can work together on a broader scale. We need to set up mobility partnerships with Egypt, where we deal with migration, labour migration, border control, fight against trafficking, visa cooperation, and assistance in setting up an Egyptian asylum system. I am very happy that we are now getting closer to that goal by setting up a working group to discuss the steps ahead", said Cecilia Malmström.

Next week, Cecilia Malmström will travel to Tunisia together with EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy Mr Stefan Füle to further assess the situation in North Africa.
