Commission advances transport cooperation with the United States

Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas, responsible for transport, is travelling to Washington on 17-19 April to reaffirm the strong EU-US transport partnership. Transport cooperation between the EU and the US is far advanced in transport modes that matter most to people travelling across the Atlantic and to the transport of goods. However, Vice-President Kallas will also discuss with the US administration how to take cooperation beyond aviation and maritime transport. In addition, he will discuss priorities for EU-US cooperation at a multilateral level, notably how to secure a successful outcome of the Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in September 2013.
Commissioner Kallas said: "It is hard to overstate the importance of aviation in today’s globalised world. And it is the transatlantic partnership between the European Union and the United States that still dominates global aviation. However, if we want to stay strong together, we should strive for more regulatory convergence and better cooperation in other areas as well."
On the occasion of his visit Vice President Kallas again took the opportunity to send his condolences to the victims of the Boston bombings and their families. He said the act of terror confirmed the need for continued vigilance and security.
The EU and US already have the largest trade partnership in the world. They are the largest aviation markets worldwide, together representing 45% of global aviation. They can further boost their competitiveness by joining forces in transport research and in deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems; in ensuring compatible standards for electrical vehicles and harmonised IT interfaces in maritime transport.
Transport also has an important role in the EU-US talks on a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Removing restrictions in transport would contribute to the creation of jobs and growth on both sides of the Atlantic.
At a multilateral level, the EU is seeking close collaboration with the US in modernising the global economic regulatory framework for air transport. The ICAO Assembly will be taking a decision on this in September 2013.
Throughout the meetings, Vice-President Kallas will be underlining the EU´s commitment to finding a global solution on curbing C02 emissions from transport activity.
