During the day, Mr Potočnik will briefly meet with Wendy Sadler of Science Made Simple, who was awarded the Descartes Prize for Science Communication earlier this year.
Mr Potočnik said: "Investing in research and development can make a real contribution to the economic development of an area. I'm keen to see how Wales in general, and the Cardiff area in particular, is approaching the issue of a move away from a resource-based economy to one focussed on knowledge. I'm already aware of some exciting initiatives taking place here, and looking forward to seeing what your plans are for the future."
Mr Andy Klom, Head of the European Commission Office in Wales, said: "It is my great pleasure to assist Commissioner Potočnik in Wales today. It's a good opportunity to highlight the impressive achievements being made here in the sphere of research that help Wales compete on an international level. Research is an essential area within the EU, key to achieving the objectives of the Lisbon Agenda aimed at high quality growth and jobs, and Wales plays an invaluable part in contributing to this process."
