With Europe’s roads at saturation point it is more important than ever to find alternative ways of transporting freight around the Union. Inland waterways offer an effective and environmentally sound way to help lighten the load. With an efficient, reliable EU-wide network of over 37,000 kilometres that is seriously under-used , canals and rivers have a vital role to play.
This video shows how the EU’s Marco Polo programme is helping to ensure that one of the oldest methods of freight transport in Europe plays its part in helping the EU to chart a course towards a greener horizon.

Setting sail for a greener horizon: Marco Polo shifts freight from road to sea
The player will show in this div

This video features some of the maritime services being supported by the Marco Polo programme - including a new generation of shipping services called motorways of the sea, which should be no more complicated to use than normal motorways. Marco Polo is trying to ensure that freight carried around the EU is shared more evenly between trucks and other forms of transport like ships, trains or canal barges.
By supporting projects that show it is both possible and profitable to shift freight away from roads to other means of transport, Marco Polo is showing the way to a more sustainable transport of goods across Europe.

On track with Marco Polo - Encouraging combined road and rail transport in the European Union
The player will show in this div

Over the next few years, the amount of freight transported on European roads is set to increase dramatically, with a significant bearing on our society, the economy and the environment. To reduce the congestion issues associated with freight transported by road, Marco Polo supports alternative means for the transport of goods across Europe - such as railways.
A number of technical and organisational challenges are yet to overcome, but the projects shown in this video prove that the potential exists for developing long distance rail freight as an environmentally sound, safe and economically viable alternative to road haulage.
