To reach the “20-20-20” climate goals, Europe is increasingly generating renewable energy through technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines. Renewable resources are, however, dependent on weather patterns and therefore generate variable amounts of power over time. In order to provide secure energy systems which delivers energy when we need it, renewables have to be used in conjunction with ‘back up’ power sources, which can ramp up generation quickly to meet peak demands, while managing demand by using smart grids and by hydro-based balancing services. Goal of the ENSEA Networking Event is to introduce the project to an European audience, exchange with other Regions of Knowledge (energy) projects and to connect to other European funds.

The topics of the 3rd European Energy Conference (E2C 2013) will cover chemistry, physics and material sciences related to energy technologies. To harness safely and efficiently the energy of the Sun both directly and indirectly, as well as the nuclear and thermonuclear power generation are in the centre of the conference programme. Energy storage in chemical and other forms, hydrogen infrastructure and energy transfer by photosynthesis will also be discussed. The aim of the conference is to lead to effective and fruitful communication between the research, government and industrial communities for a more sustainable and efficient European energy policy.
The conference will be attendend also by Robert-Jan Smits, European Commission, DG Research and Innovation, Romana Jordan, MEP and Pál Kovacs, Hungarian State Secretary.

Presently, drives for Fully Electric Vehicles and Hybrid Electric Vehicles develop their highest efficiency of around 93–95% within a speed range of usually 1/4 to 1/3 of the maximum, and at an ideal torque, whereas in real-life driving cycles the motor operates at a wider range of speeds and at partial load, resulting in much lower efficiency.

Overconsumption of fossil fuels, excessive carbon emissions and threats to air quality are all urgent problems that would be addressed if all-electric vehicles were fully operational and in widespread use. Research conducted by the European Union funded Fuerex project could give consumers in the near future the option of driving a car with almost zero emissions, without compromising on the range of the battery.

It embraces the sustainable use of biological resources from the land and sea, as well as waste, as inputs to food and feed, industrial and energy production, and also covers the use of bio-based processes inindustry. This is vital as we continue to consume the Earth's resources, many of which are not renewable, at an accelerating rate.. The bioeconomy is already a reality. For example, bio-fuels (ethanol and diesel), are being made directly from agricultural crops, and even bio-waste has the potential to become an alternative to chemical fertilizers or to generate bio-energy, which could meet 2 % of the EU renewable energy target. This 460 hectare vineyard is located in a green and prosperous area of the country where agriculture is the main industry. Making the perfect wine is an arduous process at the best of times. It demands a lot of sun, good soil, water and cold temperatures. But how do you install an environmentally friendly and sustainable cooling system in a country so warm?

Both electricity providers and consumers expect a continual electricity supply whenever they need it, and it is this fluctuation in demand combined with fluctuation in supply that is seen by many as a hurdle that must become overcome before renewable energy becomes more widespread.
A team of researchers from Israel and the United Kingdom has discovered that energy produced from the planet's oceans can increase twofold when novel methods for predicting wave power are used. Presented in the journal Renewable Energy, the results could help scientists drive and make marine renewable energy research an optimal source of power. The study was funded in part by the WAVEPORT ('Demonstration and deployment of a commercial scale wave energy converter with an innovative real time wave by wave tuning system') project, which has received more than EUR 4.5 million under the Energy Theme of the FP7.

SEE Solar – South-East European Solar PV & Thermal Exhibition
A new report from the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) has pointed out that solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity continued its remarkable growth trend in 2011.
The solar market in South-East Europe is still small, but it is growing rapidly and has great potential to become a considerable part of the global renewables market.
The event includes an information session on the EU Project Install+RES.
Two other events are being conducted in parallel:

• 9th South-East European Congress & Exhibition on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
• 4th South-East European Conference & Exhibition "Save the PLANET" - Waste Management, Recycling, Environment

Electricity prices are rising and more and more people are becoming concerned about what the future holds for energy security. What is responsible for these increases? Higher water temperatures and reduced river flows, in both Europe and the United States. A new study shows that even more worrisome is the drop in production or temporary shutdown of various thermoelectric power plants, which also trigger higher prices. The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, was funded in part by two EU projects: WATCH and ECLISE.

Carbon capture, combined with alternative renewable energy sources, has the potential to change the face of the energy market and ensure a better future for all. This is because carbon capture could mitigate the impact that traditional fossil fuels have on the environment. The concept of carbon capture is not new, as it happens naturally every day in the environment. But a team of researchers, led by the University of Nottingham (UK), has developed a novel porous material that has unique carbon dioxide (CO2) retention properties. This material can be used in the fight to minimise the levels of CO2 entering the atmosphere.
