<description><![CDATA[The European Union and the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation have today pledged to work together to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other poverty-related diseases that together affect more than 1 billion people worldwide. The agreement, signed in Paris today by foundation co-chair Bill Gates and European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, creates a new strategic partnership for research in the area. Between 2007 and 2011, the foundation and the European Commission have contributed around 2.4 billion euro (3.1 billion USD) to research and development focused on poverty-related infectious diseases, supporting the development of more than 20 new and improved products. ]]></description>

The agreement focuses on aligning the ocean observation efforts of the three partners. The work will also study the interplay of the Atlantic Ocean with the Arctic Ocean, particularly with regards to climate change. The EU and its Member States alone invest nearly two billion euro on marine and maritime research each year. The 'Galway Statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation' was signed today at a high level conference at the Irish Marine Institute in Galway. The Prime Minister of Ireland, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, attended the event.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[The European Commission today announced it has exceeded the target on research funding for Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). SMEs have received 16.3% (€2.9 billion) of the Cooperation Programme budget of €18.6 billion spent so far under the FP7. This surpasses the 15% goal set by the European Parliament and Council of Ministers at the beginning of FP7. This €2.9 billion had been allocated to to over 11000 SME participations by 30 September 2012. It is estimated that for all five specific programmes under FP7, SMEs have so far received just over €4 billion. It is forecast that by the end of FP7 (2007–2013) some 30,000 SMEs will have received around €7.3 billion in EU research funding.]]></description>

The top three prizes went to teams from Ireland, Poland and Austria for projects in Physics, Chemistry and Engineering. Runners up were also recognised for their projects in areas as diverse as Physics, Computer science, Mathematics, Social sciences and Biology. This year, Canada won the International Prize for contestants from outside the EU with a project in Environment. This year's competition attracted 117 contestants aged 14 to 21, grouped in 79 projects, from 36 countries and EU schools.]]></description>
