I believe it actually starts from the youth. To be able to get out of this crisis we need more qualified youth, a youth which is more aware of what to be European actually means, what are the privileges of being European: freedom of movement, being able to travel to study other European programs. So basically we need to talk about what being a European is: it is a benefit to be multilingual, it is a benefit to be able to travel freely in the European sphere and it is those children who will grow into this kind of education who will have more ideas, a big identity, more language skills, be more adventurous, who will have new ideas for the future. So I believe it is about focusingon European youth today to get Europe out of its crisis tomorrow.

Bulldozers, diggers, tractors: these heavy machines all apply the same basic hydraulic powers for their trays and claws. Around 85% of all hydraulic fluids leave their system through slow leaks, line breaks or system failures. Exhausted lubricants could be a severe fire risk, with a cumulative impact on plants, fish, and wildlife. When the fluids need to be disposed of at the end of their life, the cost, at €1 per kg, is around the same as the lubricant itself. As the costs associated with disposal rise, there is a growing demand for alternative options.

The European Commission's central platform for disaster response, the Emergency Response Centre (ERC), was inaugurated today in Brussels on the occasion of the Civil Protection Forum, which aims to address the EU's increasing role in disaster management.

This new Centre relies extensively on three JRC platforms used for the forecast and monitoring of floods, fires, humanitarian natural disasters and tsunamis, as well as on the JRC's monitoring and analytical capabilities (ie: flash situation reports, map services…). The JRC also co-ordinates the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service, which provides accurate geospatial information derived from satellite remote sensing which is completed by available in situ or open data sources.

Research conducted by the European Union funded Fuerex project could give consumers in the near future the option of driving a car with almost zero emissions, without compromising on the range of the battery.

The drive to decrease the ecological impact of production machines is leading manufactures to focus on novel ways to incorporate energy efficiency in the designing of new products.
One answer is the first-ever badminton playing robot - designed to test a software application that optimises energy efficiency in machine design.

The robot is the result of the ESTOMAD project ('Energy Software Tools for Sustainable Machine Design'), led by the Flanders' Mechatronics Technology Centre (FMTC) in Belgium.

Before using them on a plane, the integrity and performance of these materials have to be tested in a non-destructive way, to see how they would perform in the real-life pressure and temperature conditions of flight. Among the techniques aero-space testing facilities currently rely on are two important tests: one using laser beams and one using thermal imaging to see inside the material under stress and detect problems in structures caused by hidden defects. European researchers have found a way to replace these two with a single test.

Having hospital visits from a robot may sound like a strange form of therapy, but according to robotics experts, they can be extremely helpful therapeutic devices.

The idea comes from the MOnarCH project (Multi-Robot Cognitive Systems Operating in Hospitals).
Coordinated by Lisbon's Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the consortium of nine European companies and research centres from five countries aims to develop and introduce a fleet of robots that collaborate with medical personnel and interact with patients.

Cancer treatment is one of the most important areas of research in the medical world today.
With research predominately conducted in large pharmaceutical research organisations, it is rather significant to hear of small medium enterprises (SMEs) developing their own innovative treatment for cancer.

Two small research-based pharmaceutical companies BioInvent (the primary coordinator), in Sweden and Thrombogenics in Belgium, joined together with three other partners to form the ANGIOSTOP project, with EU-funding of nearly EUR 2 million.

To mark the European Month of the Brain, we look at one EU-funded project that has focussed efforts on drug delivery across the so-called blood-brain barrier.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB), while preforming a key protective function, is now recognised as the major obstacle in the treatment of most neurological disorders.
It hinders the delivery of many potentially important therapeutic and diagnostic substances to the central nervous system (CNS).

No wonder the asparagus is such a prized food. But its reputation as the ultimate gourmet vegetable is also reflected in its delicate cultivation, with white asparagus in particular requiring labour intensive hilling. And in Europe, this dedicated nurturing is threatening the crop as farmers struggle to find the manpower needed to harvest asparagus.

A recently published article, co-authored by a JRC scientist, explores potential solutions to the increasing competition for scarce global freshwater resources by analysing the water footprint of consumption (WFcons) for different diets in the EU28 (EU27 and Croatia). The article, published in Ecological Indicators, finds that reducing meat consumption could help make significant water footprint (WF) savings.

The water footprint concept links the use of water resources to the consumption of goods. The EU28 water footprint of consumption is defined as total volume of freshwater that is used to produce the goods consumed by its inhabitants.

Energy-saving efforts in ten new and refurbished buildings in 6 European countries (Austria, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Poland, Denmark) have today been recognised with the European Commission's GreenBuilding Awards.

Buildings are responsible for about 40% of total energy consumption in the EU. The average energy savings of 51% achieved by the winners shows that real savings can be made in buildings, towards meeting the EU's targets for energy reduction. The highest energy savings (75%) came from a refurbished Austrian office building (Amtshaus Schlagergass), which installed a newly insulated roof, heat absorption glazed windows and dynamic shading devices.

While they are racing around this ring they produce intense radiation.

For pilots, one of the most difficult skills to learn is 'upset recovery' - righting a plane that has stalled or been thrown into an unstable situation due to weather or a technical problem. When a pilot is not able to fly out of an 'upset' and the plane proceeds out of control, accidents can result. And it is precisely because these extreme conditions seldom occur in real life that it is hard for a pilot to be prepared for them: up to now, no flight simulator reflects adequately how an actual aircraft behaves during upset situations. Alternative training methods – such as using large commercial aircraft for training or smaller ones – are either too dangerous or too expensive, or may not be comparable to how large aircraft behave and respond.

The EU-funded HERMIONE project ('Hotspot Ecosystem Research and Man's Impact on European Seas') has contributed much needed data on the complexity of deep-sea ecosystems.
This in turn has created a community of scientists who continue to work together to better understand the remarkable world of the deep sea and its vast diversity of habitat and life.

Europe's almost 90 000 km of coastline span a vast area of the globe, from the polar waters of the Arctic to the warm seas of the Mediterranean.

Imagine you are an enthusiastic gardener and cherish a perfect lawn. Instead of picking the weeds by hand you use an herbicide that kills all the weeds except the grass. The result is that you will have added a considerable amount of chemicals to the soil, some of which are nasty, persistent and will stay around for a long time. The rain will transport these chemicals via sewage systems to rivers, and ultimately these chemicals will end up somewhere, in lakes or the sea. There they will enter the food chain, and be part of your next fish dinner.

The Mediterranean sea is a huge marine ecosystem with an area of 2.5 million km². The wellbeing of this unique ecosystem is vital for the health of the 427 million people living in the countries around it and the 175 million visitors it receives each year. Nevertheless, it remains fragile and continues to deteriorate due to the devastating effects of pollution. Effective decontamination is crucial and this is just one area where the Mediterranean Innovation and Research coordination Action (MIRA) is making a welcome impact.

11-26 million people suffering in Europe.
One of the most common of these allergies is intolerance to dairy products.
Although studies in this area are limited, there are EU-funded projects that have sought ways to fill this gap.

A JRC report assessing Europe's potential for pumped hydropower, the most used electricity storage, revealed that for a set of countries for which comparable data are available, the current storage capacity could be increased by up to 10 times when new plants are based on one existing reservoir. A larger capacity to store energy would allow a higher penetration of renewable energies and would support the EU's efforts to reach its goal of 20% of energy from renewables by 2020.

The saying to be 'forewarned is to be forearmed' sums up the principle objective behind the DEWS (Distant Early Warning System) project, which can detect tsunami events before they occur.

It is systems like this, which ensured that warnings were sounded last year in Hawaii of an impending tsunami, spurring residents to stock up on essentials and sending tourists in beachside hotels to higher floors in their buildings.
The advance warning gives communities in the path of the oncoming wave critical time to prepare - and could ultimately save many lives.

The issue of sleep deprivation has gone beyond the counting of sheep and into the scientific domain, as European researchers set up 'sleep labs' to study the biomedical and sociological factors keeping us awake at night.

Sleep laboratories were set up as part of the SLEEP RESTRICTION ('The Biomedical and Sociological Effects of Sleep Restriction') project, which has studied the effects of modern (often hectic) lifestyles on sleep quality.

The EU-backed researchers not only looked at the physical and mental state of the sleep deprived, but also the sociological aspects to determine how this can affect human behaviour and health.

Because I think up to now that we've perhaps had too much of a single focus in different disciplines. So this multidisciplinary horizontal research. Working together in teams and building bigger knowledge and innovation communities across Europe which is something we are doing with the European Institute of Technology which I'm very passionate about. I think that's a real step forward in developing new ways
of working together So a combined effort, but focused on solving those big challenges and what interest me is when I see some universities in my region and other places, starting to organize their own research program around societal challenges.

The battle to curtail the global impact of aerosols has taken a step forward with the most extensive aerosol research project conducted in Europe so far.

The project EUCAARI ('European Integrated Project on Aerosol Cloud Climate and Air Quality Interactions'), has resulted in a renewed understanding of how aerosols affect the planet's radioactive balance.

A major part of the study comprised the investigation of present-day aerosols in cooling applications, which are expected to be reduced dramatically by 2030.

Understanding the human brain and its diseases is one of the greatest scientific and philosophical challenges. During the last few decades, brain research has made great progress on all fronts but much more is still to be discovered.Advances in neuroscience are crucial to keep our ageing societies and our economy healthy. Some 165 million Europeans are likely to experience some form of brain disorder each year – from anxiety to depression to dementia – and treating these disorders now costs some €800 billion in Europe every year. The European Month of the Brain is packed with activities to make a difference. There are more than 50 events in 19 countries:

• to increase our awareness of the importance of brain research and healthcare matters
• to showcase EU achievements
• to outline foresight research and policy
• to improve the resource allocation for brain research and healthcare within and between EU member states and associated countries
• to lift taboos around mental health

A study on the mobility of actinides in peat carried out by JRC scientists and partners revealed plutonium has migrated downwards to a much larger extent than uranium reaching layers corresponding to the pre-nuclear age. The analysed peat core was collected from an undisturbed ombrotrophic peat bog, receiving water only from atmospheric precipitation. It represents an excellent sample for the investigation of radionuclides from stratospheric weapon tests fallout. The results are important to evaluate the risks associated with other kinds of nuclear contamination, like those of nuclear accidents or releases from nuclear facilities and nuclear waste disposal repositories.

It sounds like something from a science fiction film, but the concept of robots cleaning our streets is becoming a reality with what is believed to be a world first.

DUSTBOT ('Networked and Cooperating Robots for Urban Hygiene') is an original idea, which operates robots in partially unstructured environments (such as squares, streets, parks) to sweep up rubbish and dirt.
They can also collect small quantities of home rubbish on demand from citizens, at their doors.

Many ideas for EU-funded projects are born in the quest to further scientific research, particularly in areas where little information exists.

This applies to the project CoralFISH, which has uncovered information on how fish use their habitats in the deep sea, and as a result new tools and methodologies have been developed to address this lack of data.

The project partners also assessed the interaction between corals, fish and fisheries, and then used this information to develop monitoring and predictive modelling tools for ecosystem-based management in the deep waters of Europe and beyond.

Much has been said about the effect of climate change, but little is known about its impact of water-related health issues.
Scientists are now suggesting that greater quantities of rainfall and bigger storms could be responsible for more unsettled stomachs in parts of Europe.

The VIROCLIME project has studied the impact of climate change on the transport, fate and risk management of viral pathogens in water.

More than 160 researchers across 10 European countries joined together, in what is being hailed as the first international project to focus on ocean acidification and its consequences.

According to the partners in the EPOCA project ('European Project on Ocean Acidification') marine research was a relatively new field when they initiated the project four years ago.
It brought together scientists who were concerned about the possible risks associated with ocean acidi?cation for marine organisms and ecosystems.

Its onset is insidious. Its progression gradual. People with declining hearing often mistakenly believe the problem is that their conversation partners mumble or speak too quickly – and as hearing ability diminishes further, social exchanges slowly turn from fluid repertoires to too many non sequiturs. Frustrated from no longer being able to understand others well in social settings, people may stop going to the theatre or senior centres, or even just to a restaurant with friends or family. This social isolation, in turn, is associated with depression and cognitive decline. Disturbances of gait and balance have also been linked to ARHL.

Traditionally, those eating seaweed-based diets have shown fewer instances of obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and other nervous disorders.

Remember the days when downloading one song could take 30 minutes and over 28 hours to download a movie? This, of course, was before the introduction of broadband which revolutionised Internet use.
Now, broadband is set to benefit from a radical makeover, thanks to European funding for information and communications technology (ICT).

The pan-European ICT project DISCUS ('Distributed Core for Unlimited Bandwidth Supply') is led by CVTR, Ireland's telecommunications research centre, which is connected to Trinity College Dublin.

The latest advances made by an EU-funded team of researchers to marry the Web and TV demonstrate how technology convergence is making our lives so much easier.

The NOTUBE ('Networks and ontologies for the transformation and unification of broadcasting and the Internet') project has developed solutions which convert the humble TV into a personalised, interactive experience.
It used to be that we turned on the TV and had no choice but to watch a specific show at a specific time.

However, urbanisation, extensive irrigation and variations in rainfall patterns due to global climate change have led to serious water scarcity in many areas of the world. A European research project has developed a transport system consisting of water-bags and tugboats to bring fresh water to the hardest-hit coastal and island regions around the Mediterranean. Areas under increasing pressure from water scarcity, particularly in the summer months, include small cities and islands along the coasts of Spain, Greece and Italy, among others.

The destruction of trees as a result of the ash dieback fungus has been
a growing concern among scientists, having seen its rapid spread across Europe since the 1990s.

The fungus, which originated in Japan, emerged in Lithuania and Poland two decades ago, and moved swiftly across the continent, with 300 confirmed cases reported in the United Kingdom alone.
But now scientists have just completed an EU-funded project to detect and monitor the quarantine plant pests, which were previously putting both European forestry and crop production at risk.
