Star Projects - A tale of underground alchemy

In a coal mining area around Katowice in Southern Poland, a team of scientists have been set to work. However, rather than extracting coal, they are using a mine to experimentally assess an alternative method to energy production - introducing steam and oxygen to coal produces hydrogen. This experiment is being carried out as part of the EU research project HUGE (Hydrogen Oriented Underground Coal Gasification for Europe).

Events - Common View on Biomass Feedstock Availability for the SET-Plan European Industrial Bioenergy Initiative - 16 April 2010, Brussels

The (SET-Plan) European Industrial Bioenergy Initiative (EIBI) addresses the technical and economic barriers to the further development and accelerated commercial deployment of bioenergy technologies. The availability of sustainable biomass is a precondition for the ambitious programme of innovative bioenergy demonstration and reference plants of the Industrial Initiative. Studies on biomass feedstock potential give a very wide range of predictions. To pursue the ambitions of the EIBI it is desirable to narrow down this range of predictions. This dedicated workshop was organised by the Research DG to clarify the assumptions of these studies, ...

The Alps, known as "Europe's water tower", is home to glaciers that supply Europe with 40% of its fresh water. It is the pristine alpine streams that supply rivers like the Rhine, Danube, Po, and Rhone with the water that makes transportation and irrigation in many parts of Europe possible. However, studies have shown that the rate at which alpine temperatures are increasing is more than twice the global average. How climate change will affect water resources in mountainous regions is the subject of a major European Union research project, called ACQWA, involving three dozen scientific partners from within and outside of Europe.

Social Sciences and Humanities - Information Day on "Social Platform on Sustainable Lifestyles" : presentations available

One of the key tasks in the early 21st century is to reconcile the need to reduce the levels of energy and environmental resources and transport services we consume, while at the same time improving the quality of life for all in the context of an ageing society. A social platform on "sustainable lifestyle" was supported to define a research agenda in the area driven by societal concerns. Directorate-general for Research organised an Information Day in Brussels for interested researchers, research institutions, NGOs and civil society organisations, companies, SMEs, public administrations, etc.

Social Sciences and Humanities - Contributions of the Seminar "The World in 2025"

This Seminar first highlighted the main trends up to 2025 (demography, urbanisation, macro-economic projections, education, science and culture). Secondly, it underlined the tensions on natural resources and the new production-consumption patterns while attempting to identify the so-called "wild cards". Thirdly, the potential transitions were evoked (multi-polar world, socio-ecology, beyond technological innovation). Finally, the next steps in European foresight and forward-looking activities were presented by the European Commission.

Europeans, particularly in the southern areas, are favouring the use of solar power over the conventional oil and gas methods. The conversion of sunlight into electricity can keep costs down and help sustain the environment. While the system seems foolproof, experts say problems exist with respect to the installation of advanced solar power systems. A team of researchers has launched an investigation to determine the source of this headache: red tape!

A new study suggests that Europe could achieve safer supply of energy and climate change mitigation through renewable energy. The study also outlines how a 'SuperSmart Grid' could support long-distance transmission and decentralised energy production. Ultimately, such a grid could enable a complete renewable energy system by 2050. The study is part of CIRCE, a project funded under the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), with EUR 10 million. Scheduled to end in 2011, CIRCE is targeting the development of an assessment of the climate change impacts in the Mediterranean area.

A quarter of the total energy used in Europe is for lighting purposes. Current research efforts are focusing on new technology with the potential to halve European lighting costs.A European project is aiming to develop technology based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to create a new, revolutionary kind of light source. The standard light bulb is very cheap to manufacture, but most of the energy it uses is converted into heat rather than light, which is why light bulbs can become incredibly hot. Organic LEDs are about twice as efficient as compact fluorescent lighting and 8 times more efficient than traditional incandescent lighting.
