Skellefteå, a town situated in the north of Sweden, will be joining the celebrations for European Researchers’ Night. With a population of about 70 000 people, Skellefteå has a long history in mining and forestry. Today, however, music, the media and computer games are the fastest growing sectors of the local economy. On the programme of events for the evening will be the building of intelligent robots out of lego and the possibility of attending any of the following seminars: - 8.30-9.30: ‘Physics in the everyday environment - 257 everyday mysteries explained over a cup of coffee’, by Patrik Nordqvist, university lecturer and author
- 10.00-11.00: ‘Film and picture telling – visual communication’, by Henny Noremark, stage designer
- 10.00-11.00: ‘Research into women’s soccer’, by Jonny Hjelm, lecturer at the University of Umeå
- 11.30-12.30: ‘The municipality gets help from research students’, by Bo Siegwan, operational developer at the City Council of Skellefteå
- 11.30-12.30: ‘Wireless broadband – why do we need it and how does it work?’, by Christer Åhlund, PhD in mobile networks, City Council of Skellefteå
- 13.00-14.00: ‘Foreign ground – game prototype for training of UN-soldiers’, by Nigel Papworth, game developer
- 13.00-14.00: ‘Wood – more then just cut trees. Preservation of the old ship WASA in Stockholm’, by lecturers and PhD students of Luleå Technical University
- 14.30-15.30: ‘Local history studies’, by Ulf Lundström and Fredrik Palm
