The European Commission has launched their latest Youth Employment Package requesting a guarantee from all Member States that every young person receives a quality offer of employment or training within four months of leaving school, or of being unemployed. The proposal will make full use of EU funding and in particular the European Social Fund (ESF), which was set up to reduce the differences in prosperity and living standards across EU Member States and regions.

When designing training schemes to assist the creation of a knowledge-based economy, policy-makers should not focus solely on highly skilled workers. To keep unemployment at a minimum, strategies for increasing the employability of low-skilled workers must also be embraced, according to a study carried out for the European Parliament’s Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA). The study, conducted by teams from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK, assessed ‘Interactions between new technologies and the job market, flexicurity and training/vocational training’.

TRAYSS PRIME is an EU-funded scheme to help train young European life science researchers in management skills for work related topics such as projects and innovations, intellectual property, science and research, total quality, and science, ethics and public relations. The latest state-of-the-art tools and techniques will be used in a series of workshops that aim to increase international cooperation between scientists and boost European scientific research activities and competitiveness.

Tremors have long wreaked havoc across the globe and Africa has not been left without a scratch. Evidence shows that the rift valley in Ethiopia is expanding, albeit at a slow rate. Enter a group of international researchers, led by Dr Tim Wright, a geophysicist at the University of Leeds, who successfully clinched a €3.79 million grant from the National Environment Research Council (NERC) in the UK to study seismic activities that occur in the Afar desert of Northern Ethiopia.

Construction recently began on the Advanced Training Centre (ATC), an initiative undertaken by several European countries to provide young researchers with cutting-edge facilities to carry out their work in life sciences. The Centre is located on the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) campus in Heidelberg, Germany, and is the result of the combined efforts of The German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), the Klaus Tschira Foundation, the federal state of Baden-Württemberg and the EMBL member states.

The European Commission has just published a call for proposals for the ‘Euratom Fusion Training Scheme' – a new training programme aimed at boosting European fusion energy research, particularly in light of the imminent construction of the first international large-scale fusion experiment – ITER – in Cadarache, France.

Finnish scientific agencies have launched a new funding scheme to attract (and integrate) top foreign researchers to its shores. The idea is to recruit high-level international researchers, who are committed to closely integrating themselves into the Finnish research community, for a fixed period, reports the National Technology Agency (Tekes).
