Conference on sustainability research,
Stockholm, 9 to 11 May 2001.

Stockholm is the setting for the 'Bridging the gap' conference on sustainability research and sectoral integration, being hosted by the Swedish Government in Stockholm from 9 to 11 May 2001. The event is being organised jointly by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the European Commission and the European Environment Agency (EEA).

Objectives of the 'Bridging the gap' event are to identify gaps between sustainability research and sectoral integration, to pinpoint key R&D issues in this area and to advise end users on the R&D potential of sectoral integration. Themes will include the development of the European Research Area, implementation of the sixth environmental action programme and EU policy on sustainable development - ahead of the European Council meeting in Gothenburg (SE) on this subject in June 2001.

Among the speakers at the conference will be Commissioner Philippe Busquin (responsible for research), Kjell Larsson (Swedish minister of the environment), Bedrich Moldan (chair of the UN commission for sustainable development), Thomas Östros (Swedish minister of education and science) and Commissioner Margot Wallström (responsible for environment).
