Dr Riitta Mustonen is Vice President for Research at the Academy of Finland since 2007 with main responsibilities for science policy, research funding and international cooperation. Her scientific background is in genetic toxicology, radiation biology, health effects of environmental hazards (PhD 1991, University of Helsinki).
Dr Mustonen has been active in a number of committees and working groups at Nordic and European levels, e.g. the expert group of the Interim Evaluation of the EU 7th Framework Programme. She is Vice Chair of the NordForsk Board and Finnish delegate to EMBC and Council of EMBL. As from June 2011 she is also chairing the Strategic Forum for International S&T Collaboration (SFIC) of the European Research Area Committee (ERAC).
