A new road scheme in central Poland is cutting travel times in an historic part of the country, reducing delays, boosting road safety and improving journeys.

The Łódź Western Bypass, together with a section of the Pabianice bypass, travels along over 15 kilometres of road, linking urban and rural landscapes. This EU investment, located in and around Poland’s Łódź Province, is designed as a crucial part of the national road network and is bringing benefits to rural areas in the heart of Poland.
The new expressway, which is already operational, is improving connections and transit journeys in and around Łódzkie, and is improving road safety. Reduced journey times are estimated to lead to time savings of up to EUR 22 647 000 per year for passenger transport, and almost EUR 4 000 000 for freight transport.
Arteries in the heart of Poland
The Łódź Western Bypass and Pabianice bypass are located at the centre of Poland, in a region made up predominantly of farmland and forestry. The route is a section of the national road No 14 from Łowicz to Złoczew. The municipalities of Ksawerów and Dobroń are also set to benefit from the modern transport route, bringing improved access to small towns and the regions surrounding them.
This twin-bypass project is made up of a 9.61 km expressway and a 5.56 km national road. The scheme includes the construction of road junctions, noise barriers, and access roads, along with culverts to direct water - and even animal crossings. Traffic management and road safety facilities form a central part of the infrastructure, while high environmental standards are maintained and monitored throughout.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Łódź Western bypass along the S-14 expressway and section of the Pabianice bypass” is EUR 141 824 796, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 108,504,088 from the Operational Programme “Infrastructure and Environment” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period under the priority “Transport safety and national transport network”.
