Guiding visitors through one of Europe’s largest botanical gardens

  • 17 December 2015

ERDF investment has been pivotal in building an educational trail through one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe.  Tourist numbers are on the rise.

Visitors can spend hours wandering around and admiring nature, while learning about the most extraordinary species of plants and trees. The new infrastructure such as paths, benches and bins make the experience easier and more enjoyable.

With 30 000 plants representing some 3 500 different species spread across 54 ha of land, Rogowo Arboretum in Łódzkie, Poland is one of Europe’s biggest botanical gardens. It is also one of the easiest to get lost in.

For nature lovers

Rogowo Arboretum opened in 1925 and is mainly used for scientific and research purposes. However, thousands of tourists also come to the area to enjoy its natural beauty. Thanks to the EU investment, tourists can now also avail of tailor-made educational trails.

The project has improved the sightseeing facilities of this famous botanical garden by uniting the main parts of the garden with a trail that protects users from adverse weather conditions. The path is also accessible for wheelchair users.

The 2.4 km long trail allows visitors to see the most interesting parts of the garden and encourages them to study the most important species of plants and trees. Visitors can learn about rare (and popular) species, their economic importance as well as their impact on the environment.

Rogowo Arboretum also grows plants and trees, which are at risk of extinction.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Educational path in arboretum in Rogowo” is PLN 418 839 PLN (approx. EUR 97 970), of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing PLN 281 194 (approx. EUR  774) from the Operational Programme “Łódzkie” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
