3.4 Tackling water scarcity in Africa
In partnership with Friends of Europe
23 May - 14:30 - 16:00
Demand for water is soaring around the world, yet already more than one billion people have no access to safe water. In northern, western and southern Africa, 14 countries are suffering from water stress, and water shortages aggravated by climate change are hitting food production in many regions. The lack of clean drinking water and sanitation is the cause of diarrhoea and cholera that kill 1.5m African children yearly. How should African governments address water scarcities? Are initiatives like the Global Water Partnership and the African Water Stability beginning to show results, and what can the private sector do to boost infrastructural investment? Is a more efficient and diversified allocation of water in Africa, especially for agriculture, on the cards?
