The Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union hosted the EU Youth Conference. The focus was on the setting of a Guiding Framework to launch a consultation of young people across Europe on the theme of "youth empowerment for political participation".
The EU Youth Conference also debated the promotion of young people's access to rights as a meaningful way to enhance youth autonomy and participation in social life, in line with the overall theme of youth empowerment for the trio-presidency countries (Italy-Latvia-Luxembourg).
European and national policy makers from over 30 countries and youth representatives participated in this event. The EU Youth Conference is a milestone in the conduct of structured dialogue , a process which enables young people to contribute to shaping the policies that affect them: young people from all over Europe discussed key issues affecting their day to day lives with policy makers.
The conference endorsed a Guiding Framework on the thematic priority of "Youth Empowerment for Political Participation".
This Guiding Framework is the basis for a consultation of young people across Europe, which will run from October 2014 until March 2015, and will serve as a framework for the Structured Dialogue to be conducted during the Latvian and Luxembourg presidencies.
The EU Youth Conference participants also endorsed Joint Conclusions on the theme of "Young People's access to rights", which will be taken into account in Council Conclusions to be adopted under the Italian Presidency by EU Youth Ministers at their meeting in December 2014.
