Algeria

Located in a strategic intersection of sub-Saharan Africa and Europe, Algeria is increasingly facing migratory pressures stemming from regional instability and regional socio-economic situation.
Algeria is a country of destination and to a lesser extent of origin and transit.
As country of origin it is mainly a source of legal migration to the EU, while the number of irregular Algerian migrants remains low.
Migrants having Algeria as destination or transiting through it are mostly sub-Saharan Africans; while Palestinians, Syrians and other conflict-affected communities seek refuge in the country. The majority of migrants arrive in southern Algeria via Niger and Mali and then move further North. The Algerian authorities have invested extensive means and efforts in reinforcing border security, in the fight against migrant smuggling and in the operations of return of migrants.
