State of the Union

13 September 2023

#SOTEU

Every year, the President of the European Commission talks about the important issues facing Europeans and presents ideas for solving these issues in the State of the Union (SOTEU) speech.
This includes suggestions for new European laws
or policies.

Citizens tell us about their needs and propose solutions. We listen and respond with proposals.

European Union Member States and the European Parliament then consider these proposals.

Last year’s speech,
SOTEU 2022, outlined ideas to address challenges including:

Russia’s war against Ukraine

The energy crisis

Climate change

A woman holding a megaphone

Defending democracy

Since the last SOTEU,
the European Commission delivered several ground-breaking proposals, including:

A new approach on mental health

The EU’s first ever comprehensive approach
to mental health, with concrete actions to promote good mental health for Europeans.

Electricity markets

A revision of the electricity market rules to ensure
better prices for consumers.

A European Year of Skills to address labour market shortages

To make sure that people’s skills are adapted
to the changing labour market.

Democratic institutions must constantly gain and regain the citizens’ trust. We must live up to the new challenges that history always puts before us.
