It has become a tradition to open the Week together with the current presidency of the Council of the EU. This year Estonia welcomes the #BeActive community to kick off the Week in Tartu with a range of activities including cycling festival for children, events on healthy lifestyles and many other activities. The official opening will include delegates from institutions and the world of sport and can be watched online across Europe via our web stream below.

Tartu call for a healthy lifestyle

Speaking in Estonia, Commissioner Navracsics just issued the Tartu call for a healthy lifestyle. Co-signed by Commissioners Andriukaitis and Hogan, the call sets out joint actions to promote healthy lifestyles.

Saturday 23 September - Official opening

Saturday morning will see the week get underway at Tähtvere Sport Park in Tartu with a children's cycling festival and speeches from:

  • Mr Urmas Klaas, Mayor of Tartu
  • Mr Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport
  • Mr Indrek Saar, Minister of Culture of Estonia
  • Mr Niels Nygaard, President of the Danish Olympic Committee
