It has become a tradition to open the Week together with the current presidency of the Council of the EU. This year Estonia welcomed the #BeActive community to kick off the Week in Tartu with a range of activities including cycling festival for children, events on healthy lifestyles and many other activities. The official opening included delegates from institutions and the world of sport. Videos from the event will be published shortly.

Tartu call for a healthy lifestyle

Speaking in Estonia, Commissioner Navracsics just issued the Tartu call for a healthy lifestyle. Co-signed by Commissioners Andriukaitis and Hogan, the call sets out joint actions to promote healthy lifestyles.

Friday 22 September - Seminar on Healthy Lifestyle

The day before the European Week of Sport kicked off officially, the European Commission brought together key voices from the world of sport for a session on healthy lifestyle.

Saturday 23 September - Official opening

Saturday morning saw the week get underway at Tähtvere Sport Park in Tartu with a children's cycling festival and speeches from:

  • Mr Urmas Klaas, Mayor of Tartu
  • Mr Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport
  • Mr Indrek Saar, Minister of Culture of Estonia
  • Mr Niels Nygaard, President of the Danish Olympic Committee
