EPIC Sounding Board
The activities of the European Platform for Investing in Children are guided by the Sounding Board. The role of the EPIC Sounding Board members is to highlight key activities carried out among their networks in the areas relevant to child and family policy and to support the development of the EPIC platform to ensure that content is relevant for policymakers and stakeholders.
The EPIC Sounding Board consists of the following organisations:
- COFACE Families Europe
- Save the Children
- ChildONEurope - the European Network of National Observatories on Childhood
- SIRIUS – Policy Network on Migrant Education
- International Network on Leave Policies and Research
Below we present a short summary of the work of each of these organisations.
Eurochild advocates for children’s rights and well-being to be at the heart of policymaking.
Eurochild is a network of organisations working with and for children throughout Europe, striving for a society that respects the rights of children. Eurochild influences policies, builds internal capacities, and facilitates mutual learning and exchange of practice and research.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is the foundation of all of Eurochild’s work.
COFACE Families Europe is a pluralistic network of civil society associations representing the interests of all families. COFACE’s focus is essentially on policies and legislation that impact the lives of children and families, in particular in the fields of social protection and inclusion, safeguarding the rights of disabled and dependent persons, tackling child poverty, reconciling family and work life, migration, inclusive education and early childhood education and care, parenting support services to families, information and communication technologies, health and consumer policies, and other relevant policy areas. COFACE Families Europe advocates for policies of non-discrimination and equal opportunities between persons and between family forms and specifically supports policies aimed at increasing equality between women and men, with a special focus on reconciliation between work, care and family life.
Save the Children is an international non-governmental organisation that promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries. Save the Children’s vision is a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation, whereas its mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. The organisation was established in the United Kingdom in 1919 and currently operates in more than 120 countries around the world.
ChildONEurope - the European Network of National Observatories on Childhood - is a technical-scientific body born in 2003 in the framework of the Permanent Intergovernmental Group "L'Europe de l'Enfance". The partners of ChildONEurope consist of the representatives of National Observatories and National Ministries in charge of policies for children, whereas l'Europe de l'Enfance is composed only of the Ministerial representatives. ChildONEurope aims to create a forum for discussion and the exchange of knowledge and best practices on children's policies, mainly through research and study activities.
SIRIUS – Policy Network on Migrant Education, established as an international not-for-profit association in March 2017, brings together key stakeholders in migration and education from around Europe including policymakers, researchers, practitioners and representatives of migrant communities. SIRIUS transfers knowledge and influences policy developments in order to help pupils from a migrant background achieve the same educational standards as their native peers.
The network focuses on the younger generations of immigrant families, primarily those coming from non-European countries but also ethnic minority groups.
The Association promotes:
- The universal right to education for all without discrimination;
- A high quality public education for all people with a migrant background;
- School integration by removing barriers at school for children and youths with a migrant background to reduce segregation and early school leaving;
- Curricular and teaching methods which are respectful of cultural, linguistic and religious diversity;
- The inclusion of young adults and adults of all ages in lifelong learning activities.
The purpose of the Association is also to encourage inclusive policymaking so that governments, authorities, schools and communities take action to promote and implement policies and measures aimed at promoting equity and social justice in education; improving educational opportunities; promoting social inclusion; and fighting discrimination.
The International Network on Leave Policies and Research consists of over 60 members from 42 countries, all of whom are experts on leave issues. An international leave policy review (with country updates and cross-national tables) is produced annually. The review is a unique policy and academic resource, widely used by academics, students and organisations.
The network holds annual seminars focusing on leave policies in a host country and wider cutting-edge international developments in leave policy and research (including gender equality; care across the life course; workplace cultures; links between parental leave and early childhood education and care; fathers and leave policies; and fertility decline). Representatives from intergovernmental organisations (such as the OECD and EU) and relevant national government departments are present at these seminars.
Stakeholders contribute to EPIC and support the sharing of information and practices among stakeholders, policy-makers and practitioners.
